About the role

The Head of Tax reports directly to the Chief Accounting Officer and is responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal and state tax laws and regulations. Key responsibilities include developing and implementing tax strategies, serving as a thought leader, collaborating with Government Relations, monitoring tax law changes, advising on tax reporting issues, and supervising indirect tax accounting.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement tax strategies to optimize the Company’s tax position in partnership with key business stakeholders
  • Serve as a thought leader and actively participate in trade associations
  • Collaborate with Government Relations to support advocacy for tax matters of importance to the Company
  • Maintain strong working relationships with Company’s external auditors, outside counsel, and other advisors
  • Ensure strong control environment in compliance with SOX and MAR requirements
  • Coach and develop a team of tax professionals

Requirements

  • Minimum 12 – 15 years of tax reporting and compliance experience in the life insurance industry or in a tax practice of a major accounting firm working with life insurance companies; CPA required
  • Experience dealing with federal, state and local tax regulators
  • Technical expertise and experience in life insurance tax and tax accounting (ASC 740, SSAP 101), consolidated tax return regulations, and Life/Non-Life group issues
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong accounting and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage issues and projects across Tax and business partners
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex financial and process-related information to management
  • Ability to manage multiple complex tasks towards completion at the same time
  • Seasoned leader with track record of growing talent and developing strong teams
  • Bachelor’s Degree, ideally in Accounting or Finance, required; Masters in Tax/Accounting, highly desirable

Pay

$290,000 - $330,000 base salary plus competitive performance-based incentives determined by company and individual results.
