Head of State Tax Audits & Planning

About the role

For our client, we are seeking a Head of State Tax Audits & Planning to join the team of a leader in the Manufacturing & Automotive space. This role will lead state tax controversy, audit management, and planning efforts across a complex multistate footprint. The position will partner closely with finance, accounting, and business leaders to evaluate initiatives, legislative changes, credits, and incentives through a state tax lens. It will also help ensure accurate tax provision support, return positions, and responses to notices while managing exposure tied to U.S. state tax implications of global operations. Location: Remote - US based candidates only, no visa sponsorship available

Responsibilities

• Manage state tax controversy and oversight of audits and litigation
• Work with auditors across all 50 states to resolve complex issues
• Evaluate business initiatives and legislative changes for tax impact
• Lead identification and evaluation of state tax credits and incentives
• Support tax provision function and ensure accurate forecasting
• Guide state tax return positions and resolve notices
• Advise on U.S. state tax implications of global company activities

Qualifications

• B.A. or B.S. required; CPA and M.A. in Tax preferred
• 10+ years in state and local audits, including a minimum of 5 years managing state audits
• 5 years at a Big 4 accounting firm or equivalent experience
• 5 years handling multinational corporations with multiple state nexus
• Deep understanding of state tax legislation and implications of international tax provisions

Pay

$150,000 – $180,000 annually
