About the Department

The Fund Development department aims to develop and implement strategies to increase the funding income of Islamic Relief through a range of fundraising initiatives and through acquisition and retention of donors, volunteers, and community supporters.

About the Role

The National Fundraising Manager serves as an essential member of Islamic Relief Canada's senior management team, directly reporting to the Director of Fundraising. The successful candidate will actively participate in making strategic decisions affecting IRC’s Fundraising and community engagement department. In partnership with other senior managers, this position is responsible for the implementation of fundraising and development activities. The role involves forging new relationships to build IRC’s visibility, impact, and resources, designing and implementing a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances, and cultivating individual and philanthropic support.

The incumbent will establish and implement best practices in community fundraising activities, including fundraising strategy, resource planning, event planning and execution, volunteer management, and enhancing best practices. They will expand and diversify IRC’s donor base, work closely with other team members to secure funding for new programs, and support other department managers in taking on a more active fundraising role.

Responsibilities

  • Strategy and Planning
    • Work with the Director of Fundraising to lead the annual fundraising planning process to produce effective strategies to achieve revenue targets.
    • Lead the development of short and long-term strategies to achieve agreed organizational goals in cooperation with the Director of Fundraising.
    • Identify new potential income streams and produce strategies to access these funds.
    • Produce cost-effective budgets to achieve action plans and ensure the Fundraising Department stays within budget.
    • Ensure effective execution of Fundraising and Community Engagement plans across all regions in Canada.
  • Fundraising and Community Engagement
    • Support and partner with the Director of Fundraising and other senior managers on all major fundraising initiatives.
    • Collaborate with the Director of Fundraising to develop and implement IRC’s strategic fundraising and community engagement plan.
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive fund development strategy, including community, corporate, foundation, mosque, government grants, etc.
    • Seek fundraising opportunities such as partner events, charity tours, and challenges.
    • Oversee research of funding sources and trends to continuously develop methods and best practices in fundraising.
    • Seek strategic community engagement opportunities at national and regional levels to acquire new donors and steward existing donors and partners.
    • Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with community stakeholders.
    • Monitor and report regularly on the progress of KPIs and goals to the Director of Fundraising.
  • Staff Management
    • Identify, develop, and mentor the fund development team.
    • Provide line management of fundraising staff, including all regional managers.
    • Set objectives and work plans for all regional managers.
    • Manage workload and performance through regular one-to-one line management discussions.
    • Plan and implement personal development programs for team members in all relevant skills.
    • Undertake annual performance reviews.

Requirements

  • 5-plus years of professional management experience in a nonprofit organization; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources).
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's preferred.
  • Successful, significant, and relevant achievement at management level in a comparable national/international organization.
  • Tangible experience expanding and cultivating community stakeholder relationships over time, including but not limited to Mosques, Domestic Partners, Cultural Organizations, and Professional Organizations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.
  • Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
  • Ability to lead direct reports to excel and exceed their goals and objectives.
  • High energy and passion for IRC’s mission.
  • Ability to construct, articulate, and implement an annual strategic development plan.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Donor focus and driven.
  • Experience utilizing the strength of an organization’s brand for charity/business development.
  • Proven track record of meeting and exceeding revenue targets.

Skills

  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Track record of innovative, creative thinking in the field of fundraising.
  • Knowledge of the fundraising environment and a range of techniques and disciplines that support cost-effective income generation for IRC.
  • Exceptional written and oral skills with the ability to present and convey complex ideas and issues clearly and coherently.
  • Comfortable with public speaking.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to regularly travel within Canada and frequent international travel.
  • Strategic thinker and visionary to lead the organization in adopting new initiatives and enhancing current best practices.
  • Highly self-motivated and able to work autonomously, take initiative, and make decisions.
  • Ability to motivate, coach, and mentor peers to achieve excellence.

Schedule

IRC has a hybrid model where in-office requirements are based on distance from our Burlington headquarters or a regional office (Surrey, Edmonton, Calgary, and Ottawa). Depending on where you live, this can range from two days a week to one day a month.

Pay

Starting salary: $102,000.00. The posted starting salary is intended to provide potential candidates with a general understanding of the compensation associated with the position. The actual salary offered will start at this figure, with adjustments possible based on individual qualifications and other relevant factors.
