This role reports to the Director of Buildings and Grounds.

About the Role

The Custodian - Head is responsible for providing custodial services at an assigned site, ensuring an attractive, sanitary, and safe environment for students, staff, and visitors. This includes performing specialized cleaning operations, overseeing facility preparation for activities and events, supervising assigned custodial staff, and ensuring tasks are completed safely and on time.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans assigned facilities and/or grounds (e.g., classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, pools, grounds) to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment.
  • Conducts training and drills (e.g., fire, intruder, earthquake, health, and safety) for students and staff to ensure emergency procedures are effective and alarm systems operational.
  • Consults with administrative personnel to plan, prioritize, and schedule custodial activities and achieve site maintenance objectives.
  • Delivers supplies, mail, packages, and furniture to distribute materials to appropriate parties within the site.
  • Distributes custodial supplies and equipment to staff and storage locations.
  • Informs students and staff regarding activities, safety issues, and proper facility/equipment maintenance.
  • Inspects facilities to ensure safe operations, identify necessary repairs, and maintain clean and attractive conditions.
  • Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g., cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops) to ensure availability for facility upkeep.
  • Monitors students and staff in work areas (e.g., halls, multipurpose rooms, lunchrooms, restrooms, grounds) to prevent injuries and ensure safety.
  • Oversees facility maintenance activities and assigned custodial personnel to ensure compliance with site requirements and standards.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars to gather or convey job-related information.
  • Performs minor maintenance on custodial equipment, classroom furniture, and fixtures (e.g., changing vacuum belts, replacing faucet washers, tightening screws).
  • Prepares written materials (e.g., supply requisitions, safety inspections, work orders, inventory records, time sheets) to document activities.
  • Prepares the site for daily operations (e.g., opening gates, raising flags, sweeping walkways, snow removal, boiler cleaning) to ensure hazard-free facilities.
  • Replenishes classroom and restroom supplies (e.g., paper towels, soap).
  • Requisitions equipment, supplies, and materials to maintain availability and complete jobs efficiently.
  • Responds to immediate safety and operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, vandalism, alarms) and takes appropriate action or notifies personnel.
  • Responds to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and visitors, providing information or directing them to appropriate personnel.
  • Secures facilities and grounds (e.g., doors, gates, alarms, lights) to minimize property damage, equipment loss, or liability.
  • Supports other site maintenance staff (e.g., grounds, trades) to complete custodial activities.
  • Trains assigned personnel to develop professional trade and safety awareness skills.
  • Transports tools, equipment, and supplies to ensure availability at job sites.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid and unrestricted Illinois Driver’s License.
  • Job-related experience is desired.

Pay

$41,805.87 (prorated based on start date) – Custodial and Maintenance Salary Schedule Class C - Step 0.
