Head Custodian - EXAM (SY 26-27)

About the role

Under direction, the Head Custodian provides leadership to custodial staff and participates in cleaning and minor maintenance activities in a school building and on school grounds. This is a promotional opportunity for current Columbus City Schools Custodians or Head Custodians (Elementary) who have permanent status. Located in Columbus, Ohio, within the Custodial Services department.

Responsibilities

• Open building and conduct daily inspection of school building and grounds to ensure proper cleanliness.
• Schedule work and make work assignments to custodial staff.
• Monitor job performance of custodial staff; instruct, coach, and motivate staff to ensure quality standards are met; initiate disciplinary action as needed.
• Conduct and document conferences with custodial staff to address work‑related issues such as substandard performance, failure to comply with procedures, and excessive absenteeism.
• Conduct and document standardized weekly inspection of custodial work assignments; record findings and report results to the custodial services office.
• Requisition cleaning supplies and equipment; check supply orders and invoices to ensure shipments are received as ordered; assist truck driver in unloading deliveries.
• Prepare and submit summary reports on trash and recycling to the custodial services office.
• Arrange furniture and oversee custodial work related to student activities, extracurricular activities, civic meetings, and other events.
• Sweep, mop, scrub, wax and buff floors in classrooms, stairs, and hallways; vacuum and shampoo carpets and rugs; operate floor buffer and wet pick‑up machines.
• Wash walls, windows, and ceilings; dust furniture, radiators, and window sills.
• Sanitize fixtures in restrooms, drinking fountains, and wash basins; replace hand towels, toilet tissue, and soap in restrooms.
• Empty trash and recycling receptacles.
• Replace burned out light bulbs and tubes; replenish classroom supplies.
• Replace broken glass, unstop toilets, oil motors on fans, and perform other minor building and equipment repairs.
• Mow and trim grass, trim shrubbery, weed planting areas, and rake leaves.
• Shovel snow from sidewalks and entrances; sweep sidewalks and pick up trash or litter on school grounds.
• Observe operation of heating system to ensure proper temperature is maintained.
• Clean and perform minor maintenance on equipment, machinery, and tools used to perform custodial tasks.

Requirements

• Three (3) years of custodial experience.
• Must be a current Columbus City Schools Custodian or Head Custodian (Elementary) and have or have had permanent status in either of those jobs (passed probationary period).
• All relevant experience (previous and current) must be listed on the application; resumes are not accepted in lieu of listed work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work.
• Considerable knowledge of floor and carpet maintenance.
• General knowledge of basic lawn care and grounds maintenance.
• General knowledge of fire extinguishers.
• Ability to use a computer and related software.
• Ability to perform physical labor.
• Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds with assistive devices.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
• Ability to perform minor building maintenance and make minor repairs incidental to the electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and glazier trades.
• Ability to provide leadership and direction to custodial staff.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, teachers, supervisors, and children.
• Ability to operate a computer.

Pay

$21.53 hourly
