Head Custodial Worker

About the role

Scarsdale Public Schools is seeking qualified candidates for an anticipated Head Custodial Worker vacancy at Scarsdale Middle School. Under the direction of the Assistant Director and Director of Facilities, the Head Custodian manages the building's cleaning, maintenance, and minor repair operations, supervises Custodial Workers, Cleaners, and Substitute Cleaners, and performs other related duties as assigned. This is a Westchester County, Competitive Class, Civil Service position (FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt).

Responsibilities

• Assign tasks to Custodial Workers, Cleaners and Substitute Cleaners and supervise their work through verbal and written commands and computer‑based programs.
• Supervise the maintenance and operation of heating and ventilating systems.
• Make periodic inspections of maintenance activities to ensure they follow best practice.
• Inspect work performed by private contractors.
• Requisition, receive, store, and distribute building cleaning supplies.
• Prepare work schedules and keep time records.
• Keep records and prepare reports of supplies used and activities carried out.
• Participate in interviews and recommend hiring of subordinate personnel.
• Train and instruct Custodial Workers and Cleaners in building cleaning and maintenance tasks.
• Maintain liaison between teaching staff and custodial staff.
• May undertake readings of the school district's water system meters (consumption, ultraviolet intensity) and monitor and clean equipment as required.
• May assist with custodial, maintenance and repair work as required.

Requirements

• Must currently hold permanent status in the title of Head Custodial Worker, or be reachable on the current Westchester County Head Custodial Worker list.
