About the role
The Cook prepares food for students on both Glen Carbon and Edwardsville campuses, ensuring activity occurs in a safe, sanitary manner while following menus and diet guidelines. Also prepares food for the School’s staff.
Responsibilities
- Prepare all meals according to menus and recipes, allowing for each specific diet and substitutions.
- Present all menu items in an attractive manner with good taste and appeal, and on time.
- Maintain all kitchen equipment to meet applicable codes and regulations at all times.
- Check food requests for field trips before beginning meal preparation; utilize leftovers where possible.
- Complete all tasks in a timely, efficient manner.
- Wear a safety belt during the entire shift when lifting is required.
- Wear effective hair restraints, proper attire, and shoes during the work schedule.
- Ensure all menu items are present on the proper cart and labeled for individuals, including necessary diets, substitutions, nourishment, and supplements as prescribed.
- Maintain accurate records prior to the end of shift: break log, meal substitutions.
- Complete prep for the next day’s production before the shift ends; notify the person in charge of any needed items.
- Successfully complete all required training.
- Ensure inventory items are properly rotated, returned to the proper shelf, covered, dated, and labeled.
- Keep kitchen equipment up to code at all times.
- Act as a mandated reporter concerning incidents of purported abuse/neglect of students as outlined in agency policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of the enumerated duties.
- Prepare food for the Metro East Elementary campus and safely transport cooked food prior to the start of breakfast and lunch.
- Shop for groceries for both campuses twice a month and/or as needed.
Requirements
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Must have 2 years of experience as a cook, prep cook, or dietary aide.
- Knowledge of food preparation.
- Possess a sanitation certification.
- Ability to operate kitchen equipment including convection oven, gas range, steamer, mixer, tilt-skillet, slicer, microwave, and dishwasher.
- Able to lift 50 pounds, stoop, crouch, and grasp.
- Successful background clearance, physical, and drug/alcohol screening.
