Qualifications

  • Must be certified in History, Economics, and/or Government.
  • Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport (major sports).
  • Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport, with a commitment to examining new theories and procedures.
  • Must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions.

Reports to the athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training to achieve individual and team success.
  • Demonstrate and promote behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in student athletes.
  • Upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.
  • Supervise and advise a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches, in coordination with the athletic director and respective principal.

Duties

General

  • Implement all athletic policies approved by the Plainwell Community Schools' Board of Education.
  • Understand and consistently apply system, state, and league regulations.
  • Follow proper administrative channels for requests or grievances.
  • Attend all required public, staff, and departmental meetings.

Staff Responsibilities

  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
  • Design and conduct conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure program awareness.
  • Encourage professional growth through clinic attendance.
  • Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate staff effectiveness at season’s end.
  • Maintain discipline, address grievances, and foster morale and cooperation.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the athletic director or principal.

Administrative Duties

  • Assist the athletic director in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special events.
  • Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to facility times.
  • Coordinate with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provide documentation for physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Ensure proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment and sites.
  • Recommend policy, method, or procedural changes to the athletic director.

Student Responsibilities

  • Serve as a mentor to promote character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Monitor student athletes' grades and conduct.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards during practices, games, and travel.
  • Communicate training rules and sport-specific regulations to participants.
  • Initiate programs and policies for injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
  • Complete and submit paperwork for disabling athletic injuries within 24 hours.
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Enforce discipline, delineate due process procedures, and contact parents when necessary.
  • Assist athletes with college or advanced educational selection.

Finance and Equipment

  • Participate in budgeting by establishing requirements for the next season.
  • Recommend equipment guidelines, including type, style, color, or technical specifications.
  • Operate within budget appropriations.
  • Account for all equipment and collect costs for lost or unreturned items.
  • Arrange for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment, and submit annual inventory records.
  • Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing.
  • Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorizing access as needed.
  • Ensure athletes are only in authorized areas at appropriate times.
  • Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games for cleanliness.
  • Maintain cleanliness and upkeep of specific sport equipment.
  • Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks if custodians are not on duty.
  • Instill respect for equipment and school property in players.

Public Relations

  • Organize preseason meetings for parents, coaches, players, and guests.
  • Promote the sport within the school by recruiting athletes not in other programs and externally through news media, little league programs, or other feasible methods.
  • Maintain quality, effectiveness, and validity of oral or written releases to local media.
  • Maintain positive public relations with news media, booster clubs, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
  • Provide information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.
