Head Baseball Coach @ High School (26-27)

Extra-duty stipend position in addition to a certified role, determined by the district's salary schedule for the specific sport. Seasonal commitment based on the sport season, including pre-season, regular season, and post-season responsibilities. Schedule varies by season and competition schedule; includes after-school hours, evenings, and occasional weekends.

About the Role

The Head Coach leads and manages all aspects of a high school athletic program, including practices, game planning, and team development. This role promotes sportsmanship, academic success, self-esteem, and personal growth in student-athletes while ensuring compliance with school and state athletic regulations. The Head Coach also collaborates with staff, mentors assistant coaches, and supports the school's mission through positive leadership and effective communication.

Responsibilities

• Coach individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport.
• Plan and schedule a regular program of practice in season.
• Work closely with the Athletic Director in scheduling interscholastic contests.
• Recommend purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms, as appropriate.
• Maintain an accurate, up-to-date inventory of all uniforms and equipment.
• Maintain necessary attendance forms, insurance records, and similar paperwork.
• Oversee the safety conditions of the facility or area where the assigned sport is conducted.
• Establish performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition in his/her sport.
• Enforce discipline and sportsman-like behavior at all times, and establish and oversee penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.
• Have a good working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the sport being coached.
• Reflect a favorable impression of the Poplar Bluff R-I School District to other schools and communities.
• Follow all policies set forth by the board of education, building, and department rules and procedures.
• Create a positive influence on players, fans, colleagues, and others while prioritizing the health, safety, and welfare of athletes.
• Motivate those associated with the program to have a supportive sense of ownership.
• Promote the athletic program by strategically involving parents and media.
• Establish and maintain positive relationships with persons involved in the school's operation.
• Respond effectively to highly emotional situations with understanding and control.
• Remain organized, prepared, and flexible, adapting to revisions and changes as needed.
• Continuously study the game to improve methods, techniques, and strategies.
• Take an active role in the prevention of drug, alcohol, and tobacco abuse.
• Be thoroughly acquainted with contest rules and interpret them to team members.
• Enhance good sportsmanship among spectators and instruct players in their sportsmanship responsibilities.
• Show respect and support for contest officials.
• Keep the Athletic Director informed of major problems and decisions.
• Be a proactive host to opponents, treating them as guests.
• Inform players of expected conduct in locker rooms, school facilities, on the field, and during transportation.
• Instruct athletes on potential dangers of participating in the sport.
• Properly condition players who are members of the squad.
• Ensure the building and equipment are secure by turning off lights and locking doors.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in education preferred.
• Valid Missouri Teacher Certificate.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Skills in human relations, leadership, and conflict management.
• Knowledgeable of coaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students.
• Knowledgeable of and adherence to all local, state, and federal regulations.
• Adherence to all rules and regulations established by the Poplar Bluff R-I Board of Education and the Missouri State High School Activities Association.
• Actively pursue licensure to drive a school bus suitable for the sport being coached.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work in a climate-controlled building, as well as in inclement weather.
• Ability to stand, walk, and move around for long periods of time.
• Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids, a computer screen and printed matter, and to distinguish colors.
• Sufficient hearing to understand speech at normal room levels and on the telephone.
• Manual dexterity to operate a telephone and enter data into a computer using both hands.
• Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with sufficient volume in conversation, on the telephone, and addressing groups.
• Ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
• Ability to lift, bend, stoop, pull, grasp, and carry a variety of objects of different shapes and sizes.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy. The head coach will be evaluated by the Building Principal and Athletic Director at the end of the season.
