HDD Operator (Driller)

Responsibilities

  • Operate Horizontal Directional Drill
  • Absorb potholing and remediation tasks
  • Set hand holes and complete tie-ins
  • Drive equipment to job site
  • Confirm with locator/lead the bore path to drill
  • Set up equipment including drill, water tanks, and ground the machine
  • Drill following the predetermined drill path to the exit pit
  • Communicate with the locator/lead via radio to confirm the location of the drill head
  • Assist with the installation of proper pulling gear and hook up product
  • Reverse process to install product
  • Oversee laborers and/or crew members' work and monitor time usage
  • Conduct post-job quality checks
  • Clean, check fluid levels, and conduct a visual inspection of vehicle/equipment to assure performance
  • Perform required pre-trip, post-trip inspections and paperwork, perform needed maintenance including winterizing equipment
  • Communicate with Supervisor daily to turn in required paperwork (i.e., Bore log, vehicle maintenance reports, etc.)
  • Follow specifications for the job and company policies
  • Comply with safety procedures while driving and at job site
  • Strive for optimal production while working safely and performing quality work

Qualifications

  • 1+ years of demonstrated Horizontal Directional Drilling experience
  • Strong knowledge of underground utilities
  • Working knowledge of DOT regulations (Vehicle and Operator Qualifications) and OSHA regulations
  • Understanding of client and company work specifications
  • Ability to comply with the “Operator’s Manual” for your particular equipment
  • Ability to read and comprehend and follow all quality/safety policies and procedures
  • Self-motivated, safety, quality and production minded
  • Maintain valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL Class A)
  • Knowledge of underground potholing preferred
  • Ability to travel and work extended hours; overtime and weekends as needed
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment during extreme weather conditions at all times of the year
  • Ability to stand, stoop, crouch, kneel, and perform other related physical activities for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift and operate necessary materials to include small hand tools, power tools in a safe manner
  • Ability to lift and carry between 50 lbs. to 80 lbs. on a regular basis
  • Authorized to work in the United States

Physical Requirements

  • Drive and operate a vehicle, and/or bucket truck
  • Ability to safely work from heights, up to 50’ in bucket truck or ladder
  • Manage pole climbing, working at heights, handling ladders, and pushing, pulling and bending equipment
  • Ability to sit, stand, climb, kneel, bend, lift, crawl, squat, reach and utilize both hands and feet in an aerial and underground capacity

Environmental Conditions

  • Exposure to heat, cold, dust, wet, vibration and very loud noise
  • Traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching
  • Repeated and frequent ability to lift, from floor to above head 80 lbs. continuously and push and/or pull 50-pound loads at a time
  • Physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas
  • Stand and walk up to eight hours per day and climb multiple sets of stairs while carrying materials weighing between 40 and 60 pounds
  • Clear vision to allow differences in colors, shades, and brightness
  • Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers
  • Flexibility in scheduling to meet the needs of the business
