About the role

Classification: Non-Exempt. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

The HDD Locator is responsible for assisting the Drill Operator in locating the drill head and drilling in accordance with blueprints. Verify locate marks and confirm the location of existing facilities. Assist with clean-up and other duties as assigned. The Locator is responsible for maintaining equipment per manufacturer’s specifications and safety guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Ensures safety of the public and other underground utilities and facilities.
• Performs duties according to prescribed safety procedures and uses appropriate safety equipment.
• Reads utility locates and coordinates day-lighting of these facilities.
• Ensures all applicable permits and locates are complete and on site.
• Inspects work in progress to ensure workmanship conforms to specifications.
• Operates vehicles and equipment, from trucks to other equipment, as directed and certified.
• Leads team in the field effectively and efficiently as needed and directed by supervisor.

Requirements

• Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse climatic conditions.
• Capacity to read and understand blueprints; knowledge of utility depths and placements; general knowledge of construction practices.
• Ability to work in trenches, manholes, tunnels, and confined spaces in work settings with moderate to loud noise levels.
• Ability to lift up to 80 lbs. multiple times during a work shift.
• Ability to climb, dig, work in tight spaces, on uneven surfaces, walking, stooping, and kneeling.
• Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
• Ability to work well independently and as part of a team with co-workers.
• English usage sufficient to keep records, place orders, and prepare simple narrative reports.
• Willingness and ability to learn additional skills.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Residence Driver’s License within two weeks of employment.
• Must pass criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) background checks and a pre-employment drug screen.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent desired.
• Experience working with underground utilities desired.
• Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
