About the role
The Harm Reduction Environmental Specialist (HRES) enhances the city's image by keeping public areas welcoming, safe, and clean for all residents, businesses, and visitors. Key responsibilities include building trust with community members, particularly those who use drugs, to encourage engagement with supportive services. This involves providing nonjudgmental, trauma-informed information and referrals to harm reduction services. The HRES will promote public health and safety by identifying root causes and implementing creative, community-informed strategies, including innovative solutions to reduce syringe litter.
Responsibilities
- Build trust with community members, especially those who use drugs, to encourage engagement with supportive services.
- Provide nonjudgmental, trauma-informed information and referrals to harm reduction services.
- Promote public health and safety by identifying root causes and implementing creative, community-informed strategies.
- Participate in brainstorming and implementing innovative solutions specifically aimed at reducing syringe litter.
- Remediate biohazards, clothing, litter, and other biological hazards in various departments, including the Building Department, Department of Public Works, and the Police Department.
Requirements
This is a grant-funded position with continued employment contingent upon the availability of ongoing funding. The current grant ends in 2036, and the position's funding will be reviewed annually from the date of hire. Salary range is $49,140 - $58,240 annually, commensurate with experience. The position is full-time, 35 hours per week, and is benefited, non-union.
