Hardware Systems Engineer

We are seeking a Hardware Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team in Gaithersburg, MD, working on the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) En-Route Automation Modernization (ERAM) technology—the foundational platform for the National Airspace System (NAS). This role supports the monitoring and management of high-altitude aircraft, enhancing flight efficiency, safety, and capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Create and update CAD drawings, Microsoft Visio drawings, Cable Marking Specifications, Retrofit and Workbook Installation Instructions, System Bills of Material (BOMs), and Parts Lists.
  • Support Computer Rack and Operator Console builds.
  • Participate in the Systems Engineering (SE) hardware design lifecycle, including research, development, technical analyses, cost estimates, process improvements, and technical support to meet program objectives.
  • Develop hardware designs, electrical wiring diagrams, cable schematics, interconnect diagrams, and cable lists for system installation and integration.
  • Support hardware fabrication, assembly, integration, testing, troubleshooting, repair, and modification using standard engineering principles and diagnostic tools.
  • Collaborate with vendors, suppliers, and cross-functional teams (Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Site Activation, Procurement, Manufacturing, and Program Management) to support system implementation and integration.
  • Develop and maintain engineering drawings, source control drawings, system specifications, verification procedures, and other technical documentation.
  • Support requirements analysis, project planning, schedules, status reporting, and technical execution based on Statements of Work (SOWs).
  • Support engineering change activities, including Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), discrepancy resolution, and configuration management processes.
  • Apply engineering concepts and technical problem-solving skills independently while working effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Support occasional extended work hours or off-shift activities to meet integration, testing, or deployment schedules. Travel may be required (25%-50%).
  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills in a fast-paced technical environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline with 2–4 years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree with less than 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience supporting Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), Engineering Change Requests (ECRs), configuration management, or formal design change processes.
  • Experience supporting hardware engineering activities such as system integration, hardware documentation, cable design, CAD modeling, testing, or technical troubleshooting.
  • Experience supporting hardware integration, installation, and troubleshooting in a lab or production environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Visio).
  • Ability to work independently on moderately complex technical assignments with general supervision.
  • Experience communicating technical concepts, analysis results, and engineering solutions to peers, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, VISIO, or other CAD software tools.
  • Experience designing parts and assemblies using 3D modeling software.
  • Experience with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and/or Machine Learning (ML) technologies.
  • Experience utilizing automation methods or scripting techniques to improve technical documentation or engineering workflows.
  • Experience working in FAA facilities, including Continental United States (CONUS) Air Route Traffic Control Centers (ARTCCs), the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center (WJHTC), or the FAA Air Traffic Controller Academy (FAAAC).

Pay

Pay Range: $69,550.00 – $125,725.00. The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline and not a guarantee of compensation. Additional factors considered include responsibilities, education, experience, knowledge, skills, internal equity, market data, and applicable bargaining agreements or laws.
