About the role

The City of Monterey's world renowned waterfront area is comprised of two wharves, two launch ramps, a 413 berth marina, and approximately 180 moorings. The Harbor Maintenance Craftsworker is responsible for the preventative maintenance and repair or replacement of these structures, working as a team and project leader, and maintaining good customer relations with a public of diverse backgrounds.

Summary

Under general supervision, to perform skilled and highly skilled repair and maintenance work on wharves, structures, marina and harbor waters, machinery, and to do related work as required. This class is distinguished from other positions in the Harbor Maintenance series in that the individuals in this class perform skilled and highly skilled repair and maintenance work on the wharves, etc. This position is distinguished from the other classifications in the Harbor Maintenance series in that the former has no supervisory or lead responsibility.

Essential Functions

  • Repair or assists in the repair of piling, stringers, decking, paving, fender systems, etc. of wharves;
  • Repair and replaces floats, berth walks and marina structures;
  • Construct dock boxes;
  • Operate shop tools, power tools, trucks, harbor boat;
  • Under direction layout work, does heavy and finish carpentry; plumbing; minor electrical; fabrication from wood, plastics, and metal;
  • Direct work of part-time employees as required;
  • Rig blocks and tackles and staging;
  • Inspect and repair buoys and buoy anchorage gear;
  • Manage hazardous materials;
  • Work with dredging contractors;
  • May operate backhoe, forklift, vessels, or other large equipment;
  • On-call for emergencies;
  • Support the relationship between the City of Monterey and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff;
  • Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues and City information;
  • Perform other job-related duties within the scope of this job classification as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

  • Education: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Experience: Three (3) years experience in harbors, wharves and marina or related work including boat handling. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Must possess first responder and HAZMAT certification within one (1) year of employment. Ability to acquire and maintain various equipment certifications and TWIC card as needed.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Physical Demands: Standing & Walking – Standing for extended periods of time and/or walking distances (1 or more miles). Lifting - Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds; use proper lifting techniques including bending at the knees. Climbing - Ability to ascend 10 ft. or more up ladder(s). Manual Dexterity - The ability to perform multiple work activities requiring a significant level of physical and mental coordination, such as using hand and power tools; repair and calibration of instruments; Visual - Acuity for driving long periods; reading literature for long periods; industry warning signs and instruments; reading maps and diagrams, computer screen. Hearing and Speech - Ability to communicate in person and over the telephone. Mobility - Ability to operate a motor vehicle, and reach, push, pull, stoop, bend, and squat. Reflexes - Ability to quickly and automatically respond to emergency and safety situations.
  • Environmental Elements: Work is performed in the City harbor and outdoors with exposure to inclement weather; exposure to noise, dust, grease fumes, gases and potentially hazardous chemicals. Work is in and around moving vehicles and machinery. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
