Responsibilities

Clinical Care

  • Provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as part of an interdisciplinary team in inpatient, ambulatory, or outpatient settings
  • Works collaboratively with attending supervising/collaborating physician(s) in accordance with state law, hospital regulations, policies, protocols, and clinical pathways; may provide autonomous team-based care
  • Obtains medical histories, performs physical examinations, reviews/orders diagnostic/therapeutic tests and radiologic results, and formulates/manages patient treatment plans
  • Performs procedures, prescribes treatments and medications in accordance with institutional and state guidelines, within scope of practice and professional competency standards
  • May function as first or second assistant on operative cases (within scope and job prerequisites), using fine motor skills and manual dexterity
  • Responds to emergency situations within YNHHS parameters

Patient Education & Psychosocial Support

  • Educates patients/families on care, treatment plans, side effects of treatments/medications, and discharge plans in collaboration with supervising/collaborating MD
  • Provides psychosocial support to patients, family members, and significant others as part of a multidisciplinary team

Information Management

  • Ensures appropriate documentation in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements
  • Protects information (computer-based, paper, film, voice, or other media) from unauthorized access, modification, destruction, or disclosure

Quality Management

  • Demonstrates high standards of moral and ethical behavior, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care
  • Ensures compliance with patient-related healthcare regulatory requirements, standards, and recommendations
  • Reports safety events and near misses, demonstrating high-reliability organizational behaviors

Professional Development

  • Maintains and advances professional competency through continuous engagement in projects
  • Serves as a clinical resource for new house staff and provides service-specific orientation
  • Maintains all employee requirements determined by hospital policy
  • May serve as a clinical preceptor for NP/PA students and other healthcare professionals, and mentor pre-PA/NP candidates
  • Collaborates on research, quality assurance, and performance improvement projects
  • Assists with the formation of protocols to enhance clinical practice and expertise

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Program
  • Clinical working experience as an NP/PA in the specialty/service line preferred but not required
  • Must be appointed to the Affiliated Medical Staff of a YNHHS hospital and complete the Medical Staff credentialing process
  • Evidence of current competence to practice as an APRN, PA, CRNA, or CNM, including appropriate reference letters from physicians and practitioners

Qualifications

For Physician Assistants:

  • Active PA Certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Connecticut State Physician Assistant License
  • ACLS/BLS Certified (when indicated for position profile)
  • DEA License
  • PALS (for pediatric position profiles)
  • NRP Certification (for neonatal care)

For Nurse Practitioners:

  • Connecticut State Registered Nurse License
  • Connecticut State Nurse Practitioner License
  • Board specialty certification (as appropriate for position profile)
  • ACLS/BLS Certified (when indicated for position profile)
  • DEA License

Additional licensure, certifications, and/or continuing education credits may be required during employment based on position and area of specialty.
