About the Role

The Gym Master will assist the Athletic Coordinator and school principal in promoting direction and coordination for the athletic and activities program (grades 9-12). This position includes teaching duties and is compensated by stipend.

Responsibilities

  • Promote student success by maintaining a culture that supports high achievement, high-quality athletic programming, and professional development for coaching staff.
  • Use communication and relationship-building skills to engage the athletic community in equity advocacy and meet diverse needs.
  • Organize and coordinate ongoing professional learning opportunities for coaches and staff.
  • Manage athletic facilities, budget, and daily operations to equitably meet program needs.
  • Develop, support, and oversee programs that increase student attendance, achievement, and graduation rates, fostering team and work skills.
  • Plan and manage resources, including finances, facilities, programs, and time.
  • Communicate accurately and effectively while complying with all School Board policies and regulations.
  • Arrange workers for home events (tickets, bench officials, public address, custodial, and security services) and ensure their compensation.
  • Maintain current files on rules, regulations, and organizational by-laws/constitutions.
  • Coordinate transportation for extra-curricular events.
  • Ensure coaches complete necessary reports.
  • Coordinate usage by outside school groups and collect fees, payments, and insurance as needed.
  • Ensure participants have required health examinations, maintain accident/injury records, and promote drug, alcohol, tobacco, and steroid-free programs.
  • Arrange insurance and provide forms for coaches/sponsors to distribute to student participants.
  • Ensure proper hospitality for visiting teams, coaches, fans, and officials.
  • Promote cooperative and supportive relationships among curricular, co-curricular, and interscholastic programs within the district and community.
  • Market the program and serve as a spokesperson and advocate.
  • Encourage maximum student participation in activities and athletic programs.
  • Represent the philosophy and purpose of the interscholastic athletic program, emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect.
  • Coordinate with principals, maintenance, and custodial staff for facility improvement and maintenance.
  • Ensure supplies, equipment, and uniform needs are met, including procurement, inventory management, and distribution.
  • Coordinate with coaches, sponsors, and the registrar to check participant eligibility.
  • Oversee co-curricular and extra-curricular clubs, organizations, and activities (e.g., student government, music, publications, cheerleading, drill team).
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education and self-selected activities.
  • Investigate complaints and infractions, resolving issues or making recommendations to supervisors.
  • Oversee high school concessions after school.
  • Follow district and school procedures.
  • Accept additional responsibilities and duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and a license as required by the State of New Mexico.
  • Alternate qualifications may be considered as deemed appropriate by the Board.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform job duties and access the work environment.
  • May require sitting, standing, lifting (up to 50 pounds), moving about the school, carrying, reaching, squatting, kneeling, prolonged typing, and moving light furniture.

Equipment/Technology Handled

Must know how to operate or be willing to learn all multimedia equipment, including current technology.

Work Environment

  • Work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.
  • Handle routine interruptions with flexibility and patience.
  • Be self-motivated and able to complete assignments without direct supervision.
  • After-hours work may be required.
