This posting is in anticipation of future openings at Fort Jackson, SC.

About the Role

A Gunsmith designs, fabricates, modifies, repairs, and services foreign and domestic firearms, weapons, and accessories. This position involves work on external/internal and terminal ballistics, building custom pistols and rifles, and other weapons systems with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Performs major repairs on foreign and domestic standard and non-standard small arms weapons.
• Builds custom pistols or rifles with little or no supervision.
• Performs detailed assembly and disassembly of foreign and domestic small arms weapons, including inspection and maintenance.
• Uses gun-smithing tools and procedures with excellent knowledge; possesses moderate knowledge of firearms operating principles and ballistics.
• Applies basic shop safety procedures in a small arms environment.
• Performs support functions such as bead blasting and preparing metal parts for refinishing.
• Fabricates special jigs, fixtures, and tooling with some supervision.
• Reads and understands blueprint drawings and works from them under direct supervision.
• Serves as primary instructor on most standard and non-standard small arms weapon systems.
• Manages ammo inventory and residue turn-in, publication and catalogue updates, tool and capital equipment maintenance, calibration control, weapons cleaning, and organizational-level weapons maintenance.
• Performs all other position-related duties as assigned or requested.

Work Environment

• Frequently required to walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.
• Occasionally required to stand and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, high or precarious places, and outside weather conditions.
• May be exposed to electrical shock, vibration, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and radiation risks.
• Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Knowledge in the use of hand tools, machine tools, and other equipment necessary for assigned duties.
• Ability to design and construct prototype small arms from drawings or customer input.
• Computer literacy.
• Formal one to two-year accredited in-house gun-smithing course and/or at least two years of work experience in this area.
• Training and related experience consistent with contract/delivery order requirements.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization (US Citizenship required).
• May require travel and availability to work any shift, including weekends and other hours as needed.

Pay

Hourly rate: $30.56 (SCA-eligible position).
