Equipment Operator II

About the role

The Equipment Operator II performs maintenance, manual labor, and construction tasks related to streets, sidewalks, drainage systems, and other outdoor areas. This role involves operating a variety of light and heavy equipment to support public works projects.

Responsibilities

• Operate tools and machinery, including pneumatic and electric jackhammers, saws, hammers, mowers, string trimmers, and other hand-held power tools.
• Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes, skid steers, front-end loaders, dump trucks, street sweepers, and asphalt lay-down machines.
• Load, transport, and unload equipment and materials for assigned projects.
• Perform routine inspections of equipment, checking oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic systems.
• Maintain and repair streets, including grading, patching, sealing cracks, resurfacing, and repairing potholes.
• Level streets and other areas; dig and maintain drainage ditches and culverts.
• Sand and de-ice roadways, bridges, and sidewalks during inclement weather.
• Set up and take down traffic control zones, including barricades and warning signs.
• Inspect and repair guardrails as needed.
• Prune, cut, mow, and trim vegetation, including grasses, shrubs, and trees.
• Cut, collect, and dispose of tree limbs, trash, and debris from streets, roads, and drainage systems.
• Install, maintain, and repair street signs and pavement markings.
• Clean and restore stormwater facilities and systems.
• Perform weed and brush control along drainage ways and stormwater facilities.
• Enter completed work orders into the computer system.
• Follow safety policies and all departmental and City policies; use equipment, safety devices, and vehicles properly.
• Escalate customer complaints to a Foreman, Public Works Operations Manager, or Assistant Director.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Three to five years of experience as an equipment operator, with at least three years in the maintenance and/or construction of asphalt pavement, concrete pavement, public rights of way, and/or stormwater facilities.
• Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record, or the ability to acquire within one year of hire.
• Work Zone/Flagger certification (IMSA, TEEX, or equivalent), or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
• Passing score on the City of Cedar Park Equipment Operator Proficiency Test.
• Minimum of two heavy equipment training certificates, or the ability to obtain within two years of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• IMSA Signs & Pavement Markings Technician I certification (for Streets division).
• Texas Department of Agriculture Non-commercial Herbicide Applicators License (for Stormwater division).

Skills

• Knowledge of safe operation of light and heavy equipment and relevant Texas Motor Vehicle Code provisions.
• Intermediate-level understanding of methods, practices, materials, and equipment used in street, sidewalk, and stormwater facility maintenance.
• General knowledge of construction and repair methods, as well as applicable laws and regulations.
• Ability to load, transport, and unload equipment and materials safely.
• Proficiency in operating hand tools, power tools, and motorized equipment.
• Ability to perform minor equipment repairs and maintenance.
• Strong understanding of and ability to follow instructions.
• Basic computer skills for data entry and office equipment use.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers.

Work Conditions

• On-call rotation for emergencies and after-hour repairs.
• Subject to regular work hours, after-hours callouts, and scheduled overtime during special events, emergencies, or inclement weather.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and push or pull up to 100 lbs.
• Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, squat, crawl, talk, hear, and smell for extended periods.
• Work performed in indoor and outdoor conditions, including adverse weather and non-climate-controlled environments.
• Exposure to industrial chemicals; responsible for safely handling and transporting hazardous materials.
• Work conducted in safety-sensitive settings, including live traffic conditions, requiring constant situational awareness.
