About the role

A Gunsmith designs, fabricates, modifies, repairs, and services foreign and domestic firearms, weapons, and accessories. This position involves work on external/internal and terminal ballistics, building custom pistols and rifles, and other types of weapons systems with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Perform detailed assembly and disassembly of foreign and domestic small arms weapons, including inspection, maintenance, and minor repairs.
• Use hand tools (e.g., hammers, punches, files, stones) and gauges to perform assigned duties.
• Operate gun-smithing machinery such as lathes, milling machines, and surface grinders, with limited knowledge of associated tooling.
• Apply basic shop safety procedures in a small arms environment.
• Support shop functions, including bead blasting and preparing metal parts for refinishing.
• Manage ammo inventory and residue turn-in, update publications and catalogues, and maintain tools and capital equipment.
• Assist in calibration control, weapons cleaning, and organizational-level weapons maintenance.
• May assist the primary instructor in conducting Armorer’s courses on specific small arms systems.
• Perform other position-related duties as assigned or requested.

Work Environment

• Frequent walking, sitting, handling, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
• Occasional standing and lifting/moving up to 50 pounds.
• Requires close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision, as well as the ability to adjust focus.
• Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, high/precarious places, and outdoor weather conditions.
• Potential exposure to electrical shock, vibration, fumes, airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, and radiation.
• Loud noise levels in the work environment.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Knowledge of hand tools, machine tools, and equipment for designing and constructing prototype small arms from drawings or customer input.
• Qualification typically requires attendance at a formal 1–2 year accredited in-house gunsmithing course or at least one year of relevant work experience.
• Training and experience consistent with contract/delivery order requirements.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization (U.S. citizenship required).
• May require travel; must be available to work any shift, weekends, and other hours as needed.

Pay

Hourly rate: $27.06 (overtime-eligible under the Service Contract Act). Additional health and welfare payments may apply per SCA provisions.
