Requirements
- Knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
- Understanding of high school student needs and behavior
- Proficiency in office methods, procedures, receptionist duties, telephone techniques, filing systems, and reporting functions
- Ability to learn and apply specific procedures and operations to work situations
- Typing accuracy at a minimum speed of 40 net words per minute (a recent five-minute typing certificate, less than two years old, must accompany the application; certificates from online websites are not accepted; Kern High School District employees in positions requiring the same or higher typing speed are exempt)
- Operation of standard office machines, computer terminals, and designated audio-visual equipment
- Effective and tactful oral and written communication skills
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and complete records
- Proficiency in learning and utilizing District and local site computer systems
Applicants must be able to perform the following tasks:
- Type letters and reports regarding credits, competency requirements, and senior status
- Assist senior counselors in contacting local scholarship sources and in testing preparation and administration
- Handle attendance and minor discipline referrals through home contacts
- Conduct credit checks and notify students and parents about graduation status
- Assist with student programming and programming changes
- Notify parents of student shortages in units or on proficiency tests
- Assist with new student registration and orientation
- Provide basic information on college requirements and related matters
- Evaluate student career interests, aptitudes, objectives, and choices
- Interpret District goals and objectives to students, parents, and the community
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
Qualifications
- Completion of twelfth grade, preferably supplemented with some college-level courses in counseling or guidance
- Two years of general clerical experience, preferably supplemented with some college-level courses in counseling or guidance of students
A criminal history check will be required of the successful candidate prior to employment.
Responsibilities
Assist counselors and administration in performing a variety of complex and responsible clerical duties in support of the day-to-day operations of the counseling/guidance service. This position:
- Receives general to limited supervision from the Head of Guidance within a broad framework of policies and procedures
- Performs specialized support services within the guidance program
- Functions at a level of independence requiring a high degree of proficiency, initiative, and demonstrably proven abilities
Pay
Starting salary: $3,431.23 per month
Schedule
- 10-month position (to begin as soon as possible)
- 8 hours per day (working hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
