Growth Marketer, Community & Engagement

CommonLit · United States · 1 mo ago
RemoteRemoteMarketing$70k–$80k/yrFull-time

About the role

CommonLit's Marketing team is responsible for engaging free users of our Text Library, generating new school leads to partner with us and adopt our curriculum (CommonLit 360), supporting the engagement and retention of current customers, and building CommonLit's brand through collateral and thought leadership.

Within the Marketing team, the Growth Marketer (Community & Engagement) role is positioned to grow and engage CommonLit's free teacher user base, building the content, community, and programming that turns curious teachers into engaged advocates before a school ever becomes a sales-ready lead. This role owns the earliest stage of a teacher's relationship with CommonLit, including sign-up, first use, and ongoing engagement, and partners closely with the Growth Marketer (Lead Generation), the Retention Marketer, Brand & Impact, and the Product team to grow free-user advocacy into partnership opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Build advocacy playbooks, including in-app nurture motions developed in partnership with Product to deepen usage, and run surveys to understand what's working.
  • Develop teacher-facing content and community programming that builds and nurtures power-users, including:
    • Free teacher-focused webinars
    • Newsletters with teaching tips tailored to specific grade bands
    • Blog content in service of usage and engagement, not immediate lead conversion
    • Conferences, regional and virtual meetups, and roundtables
    • CommonLit appearances, placements, and ads in outlets like EdWeek and Chalkbeat
    • Organic social content (Reddit and others)
    • A long-term ambassador program for CommonLit's most engaged teachers
  • Own blog maintenance and content cadence.
  • Partner with the Retention Marketer and Brand & Impact to leverage customer testimonials for top-of-funnel storytelling.
  • Work cross-team with colleagues who talk directly to users (Sales, Support, Product) to exchange insights and use them to grow our audience.
  • Share insights with the broader Marketing team to support every stage of the funnel, for example giving Sales fresh angles for teacher-level leads.
  • Partner with the Performance Marketing Specialist on the hand-off between free-user activation and conversion, including strategic lead gen pushes in blog and newsletter when appropriate.
  • Report on free-user engagement and advocacy metrics, including webinar attendance and satisfaction, newsletter open/click-through rates, blog engagement, organic social performance, and ambassador program growth and participation.
  • Partner cross-functionally to track how traffic, sign-ups, sign-ins, and top-of-funnel engagement translates into conversion downstream.
  • Bring a learner’s mindset to identify what’s working, retire what isn’t, and keep testing new content, community, and advocacy approaches.
  • Additional projects as determined by the team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 2-4 years of experience in content marketing, community/growth marketing, or a related field.
  • Experience teaching ELA required (teaching grades 6-12 preferred).
  • Experience in education or another mission-driven, freemium/product-led growth environment highly preferred.

Skills

  • Hard Skills:
    • Strong writing and storytelling skills, with experience developing newsletters, blogs, and webinar content.
    • Comfortable being the “face” of CommonLit (webinar host, blog author, etc.).
    • Comfortable using or learning how to use HubSpot, Notion, Google Suite, Slack, Zoom, etc., for collaboration and development of teacher-facing content.
    • Experience hosting or producing live virtual events (e.g., Zoom or a comparable platform) preferred.
    • Experience with social media tools (e.g., Sprout Social or a comparable platform) preferred.
    • Experience with LLMs preferred; experience using Claude highly preferred.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Alignment with CommonLit's mission.
    • Comfortable operating without a rigid playbook: you can build a new motion (like an ambassador program) from scratch.
    • Genuine curiosity about what makes educators advocate for tools they love, and energy for community-building work (events, meetups, roundtables).
    • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
    • Positive attitude and willingness to learn and assist with other projects as needed.
    • Strong attention to detail and desire for feedback.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
    • Strategic thinker, self-starter, with strong time management and organizational skills.
    • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
    • Strong communication and collaboration skills, comfortable speaking and facilitating live sessions with educators (webinars, meetups, roundtables, conferences, etc.).

Additional Requirements

  • This role involves prolonged periods in a stationary position at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be US-based.
  • Must be able to travel to regional or state conferences to promote CommonLit and connect with educators; current expectation is attendance at one 2-3 day conference per quarter.

Pay

Salary: $70,000 - $80,000 per year, commensurate with experience.

Benefits

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • HSA and FSA Plans, including Medical FSA, Limited FSA, and Dependent Care FSA options.
  • Company-sponsored basic life insurance, with additional options for supplemental life insurance.
  • Legal insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with a 4% safe harbor employer match.
  • Access to exclusive discounts, including pet insurance, hotel booking discounts, and more.
  • Remote work support, including a home office set-up stipend.
  • Generous Time Off, including:
    • 16 paid holidays annually.
    • Paid time off accruals and sick leave.
    • Paid family leave, including caregiver leave, medical leave, and 12 weeks of paid parental leave.
    • 2 floating holidays.
    • Volunteer and school visitation leave.
    • Jury duty leave.
    • Bereavement and compassionate leave.
    • Blood, bone marrow, and organ donation leave.
    • Flexible work options.
    • Low-stress weeks around Thanksgiving and in late December.

As a remote-first organization, CommonLit has team members in nearly 30 states and Washington, D.C. We strive to create a collaborative and engaging workplace through various connection opportunities, including monthly remote activities (e.g., dumpling-making, yoga, virtual escape rooms), "CoffeeLit" sessions for connecting with colleagues, and learning and development opportunities for teams and individuals.
