Group Strings & General Music Teacher

About the Role

The Community Music Center of Boston, an arts education nonprofit with a mission to transform lives by providing equitable access to excellent music education and arts experiences, is seeking a motivated and student-centered group strings and general music instructor to provide instruction to elementary-age students at our community partner sites. The ideal candidate will have the ability to teach strings and general music in a classroom-based setting, a targeted interest in public school music education, and an inclusive and culturally responsive teaching style that reflects CMCB's three curricular pillars - Musical Artistry, Social-Emotional Development, Cultural Inclusion - and Student Pathways, our commitment to valuing the many different reasons that people study music. Additional teaching opportunities are available for candidates with the ability to play and teach multiple instruments.

Schedule

In person, 7-8 hours per week, Monday & Wednesday 1:00-4:30 with room for growth in both during school and after school hours.

Responsibilities

• Teach students according to curricular guidelines
• Develop instructional materials and lesson plans
• Prepare students for performance events and opportunities
• Complete attendance in registration software accurately and timely
• Maintain open and regular communication with site contacts to support educational progress
• Attend department meetings and the annual all-faculty meetings as scheduled
• Participate in department events, recitals, and concerts
• Actively respond to pertinent emails from all CMCB staff in a timely manner

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in music performance/education with knowledge in the field of string-specific performance/pedagogy or equivalent experience
• Minimum of 2-3 years teaching experience in classroom group settings (public school preferred)
• Strong time management and classroom management skills
• Ability to adapt to individual needs of a diverse student population and provide constructive feedback
• Must be adept at and comfortable with working in a culturally diverse environment with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as pedagogical and professional values
• Interest in the following focus areas: Culturally Responsive Teaching, Creative Youth Development - Student Voice/Agency, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
• Regularly reflects on practice, seeks and responds to feedback, and demonstrates self-awareness and commitment to continuous learning and development
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, when conversing with students, families, and colleagues
• Skilled at engaging with families and building collaborative, respectful relationships with them in service of student learning
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite (Google Docs, Google Forms, and Google Sheets)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a public school or community setting
• Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin/Cantonese, French, and/or Haitian Creole
• Experience working with students with specialized needs (e.g. disability, diagnosis)

Physical Demands

• Remain in a stationary position 25% of the time
• Occasionally move around the space to access teaching supplies and instruments
• Converse with students in a normal classroom setting and discern and recognize changes in tone, pitch, rhythm, and volume
• Occasionally move or transport supplies and instruments up to 10 pounds
