Rooted in the Bronx, New Settlement stands with community members to break systemic barriers, advance justice, promote leadership, and strengthen neighborhoods. By ensuring agency around education, employment, housing, wellness, and creative expression, we help cultivate an equitable society where individuals and families have the power to use their voice to create the change they wish to see. Since its inception in 1989, New Settlement has evolved from revitalizing abandoned buildings into affordable housing to a multi-generational, forward-looking organization supporting 15,000 community members annually through organizing, education, college access, youth development, arts, workforce development, wellness, and more.

About the Role

Reporting to the Program Director, the Group Leader teaches, nurtures, and encourages a group of about 15-25 elementary school students by being a positive role model. The program operates during afternoons, Monday through Friday, including some school holidays. It serves students in grades K-8th from September to June, with the possibility of summer programming in July and August.

Programs include a wide variety of stimulating hands-on art, literacy, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) activities, gym, homework assistance, and a nutritious hot meal. The role uses an age-appropriate, positive youth-development approach that incorporates health, fitness, and community engagement. Partnerships include the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Cooking, Albert Einstein Medical Center, Bronx Care Health System, ABADA Capoeira, and the Partnership for After School Education.

Responsibilities

• Understand, adhere to, and enforce school program expectations, policies, and protocols as laid out by the Program Director and Executive Director.
• Set a positive tone with students.
• Assist the Activity Specialist with providing quality hands-on activities.
• Ensure the safety of students at all times.
• Anticipate and resolve conflicts.
• Report all incidents accurately and timely.
• Supervise mealtime.
• Assist with homework and maintain the overall condition of the classroom.
• Collaborate with after-school staff and teachers.
• Interact positively with parents at dismissal.
• Participate in staff meetings and training.
• Perform other duties or special projects as assigned by the Program Director.

Schedule

Afternoons, Monday through Friday, with some school holidays. The program runs from September to June, with the possibility of summer programming in July and August.
