Requisition Id 16754 – The Computational Sciences and Engineering Division in the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a senior scientist to lead a world-class research group in Applied Quantum Technologies (AQT) within the Quantum Information Science (QIS) Section.

About the role

The QIS section includes more than 35 full-time scientists carrying out interdisciplinary, collaborative research in fundamental and applied quantum computing, communications, and sensing. With substantial institutional investments in equipment and facilities, as well as recent and expected increases in federal funding from the Department of Energy (DOE) and other federal agencies, the AQT group is positioned for rapid growth. The successful candidate will develop capabilities to advance the maturity of quantum technologies for emerging applications, oversee the group’s science agenda, lead responses to new funding opportunities, and guide the growth and development of research staff. The group conducts research in both continuous variable and discrete variable quantum information science, with extensive expertise in quantum entanglement.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee high-quality research in applied quantum technologies.
  • Collaborate with scientists in the Physics Division, Computational Sciences and Engineering Division, and other ORNL organizations to provide a unified vision and execution plan for experimental quantum sensing and computing networks.
  • Collaborate with external scientists to advance the scientific mission of the group, laboratory, DOE, and other sponsors.
  • Mentor early-career research staff, postdocs, and students.
  • Interact with program offices and agencies to develop and maintain funding for applied research.
  • Develop new research directions to ensure continued funding and group health.
  • Represent group-level work to review committees and external bodies.
  • Manage staff, including selection, retention, development, and motivation.
  • Write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals; present technical work in public forums.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated understanding of experimental physics research tasks.
  • Experience leading R&D teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience in program or research management at a large research institution or government entity.
  • Experience building and operating quantum technology in deployed environments.
  • Ability to interact effectively with senior client management and technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to write research plans, proposals, and project a vision for future quantum information science research.
  • Record of developing research partnerships and collaborations with universities, industry, and research laboratories.
  • Excellent interpersonal, independent work, communication, and organizational skills.

Special Requirements

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secure Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. It is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing-designated position, requiring a pre-placement drug test and ongoing random drug testing.
