About the role

Join the Amazon Web Services Center for Quantum Computing (CQC) in Pasadena, CA, as an Applied Scientist. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of experimental and theoretical physicists, materials scientists, and hardware and software engineers working at the forefront of quantum computing. This role requires a solid foundation in experimental physics and deep, broad knowledge of experimental measurement techniques.

The Physical Metrology and Exploration (PME) subgroup within the Device team focuses on two core missions: supporting the CQC’s central activities by developing and enhancing quantum devices, and advancing physical metrology through the refinement of existing methodologies and the creation of new measurement techniques. You will work with superconducting films, resonators, junctions, and qubits, building experiments across the integrated stack—design, fabrication, cryogenics, signal chain, and control stack software. Your research will drive recommendations for improving next-generation quantum processors.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and enhance quantum devices, including superconducting films, resonators, junctions, and qubits, to support the CQC’s central activities.
  • Identify performance limitations in quantum devices and collaboratively improve their capabilities.
  • Refine existing measurement methodologies and devise new physical metrology techniques to address gaps in current tools and protocols.
  • Design, fabricate, and execute experiments spanning the integrated stack: cryogenics, signal chain, and control stack software.
  • Conduct agile, scientifically rigorous research and disseminate findings across the organization.
  • Provide data-driven recommendations to advance next-generation quantum processors.
  • Stay abreast of developments in experimental quantum computation and innovate within the field.

Qualifications

  • PhD, or Master's degree and 4+ years of experience in science, technology, engineering, or a related field.
  • Track record of original scientific contributions, demonstrated through patents or publications in top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals.
  • Experience programming in Java, C++, Python, or a related language.
  • Broad experience in experimental physics with the ability to quickly learn new topics.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge and experience in low-temperature condensed matter physics, including superconductivity, Josephson junctions, phononics, or TLS physics.
  • Strong engineering principles, resourcefulness, and a bias for action.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within a team environment.

Pay

Base salary range: $142,800 - $193,200 USD annually. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
