BronxWorks helps individuals and families improve their economic and social well-being. From toddlers to seniors, we feed, shelter, teach, and support our neighbors to build a stronger community. Across our 60+ locations, we provide programs in a variety of service areas, including workforce development, children, youth, families, seniors and homeless prevention. Our Adolescent Development Programs provide teenagers with opportunities to develop important life skills while promoting academic achievement, career exploration, and exposure to the arts. Our middle school and high school Neighborhood Development Area Programs work year-round with students 13 to 17 years of age to ensure a smooth transition from early to late adolescence and to create a safe space for them to explore their interests. The programs operate after school and during the summer, offering: Community service opportunities, Homework assistance and tutoring, Leadership development, Literacy and STEM enrichment, Structured recreation, and Work readiness training. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Associates degree preferred.At least two years of direct experience working with children under age 13 years. Necessary content knowledge, experience, and skills to effectively implement the program activities, as required.Experience with or knowledge of Whole Language teaching philosophy preferred. Essential Duties And Responsibilities lead and supervise participant groups and create and implement activities under the guidance of an Activity Specialist or Content Specialist. Create a nurturing and supportive environment for the youthSupervise participantsImplement various recreational, educational, social, and team building activitiesProvide classroom management and instructionAct as a liaison with parentsAttend regular staff meetingsAttend First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CRP), and Responding to Emergency (RTE) trainingAttend staff training sessionsMeet monthly with program coordinator and/or program director for supervisionPerform additional duties as assigned Program Specific Responsibilities Practice and recognize in others the program values: Cooperation, Generosity, Honesty, Kindness, Respect, Responsibility, ToleranceWith program supervisors, set program goals and develop appropriate activities for childrenCollaborate with colleagues to plan team projects and eventsSupervise teenaged junior counselors Encourage a love of learning and build children’s literacy and academic skillsDevelop, submit and implement weekly lesson plans which are child-centered, age appropriate & engaging and which promote literacy, thematic exploration, & experiential learningEscort children on trips and identify opportunities for learning both inside and outside the community center facilityMaintain records of children's work. Submit portfolios as 7'equiredfor program evaluation effortMeet regularly with supervisors to p1esent lesson plans, plan for future weeks, and receive feedback and assistanceProvide homework assistance during school yearCreate a structured & nurturing environment which supports children's emotional and social developmentProvide constant supervision and engagement of children in careMaintain an organized and child-centered classroom.Promote teamwork and group bondingConference with program· supervisors regarding disciplinary issues or hold conferences with parents as needed.Attend training in principles of early childhood development, nutrition and health needs, safety and security procedures, and child abuse and maltreatment identification and preventionAssist with planning and implementation of Holiday CampObtain needed supplies from office and make requests as needed for special suppliesMaintain attendance records, meal records, sign-out sheets and other necessary paperworkSubmit required reports and paperwork to Program DirectorEngage .in activities which promote physical fitness and healthEnsure a physically safe environment for children in careParticipate in all fitness activities including swimming and gymPromote healthy behaviors and foster children's physical developmentProvide first aid and emergency care for children as neededSubmit bi-annual physicalPartner with families to promote sense of communityDevelop and build relationships with parents and families of program participants.
