Group Exercise Instructor - HP
Position Summary
The Group Exercise Instructor plays a significant role in providing a positive, enthusiastic atmosphere for members' work toward their health and fitness goals. In this visible position, the Group Exercise instructor comes into contact with members on a day-to-day basis. The incumbent must be flexible and have the ability to establish positive relationships with both members and staff.

Essential Functions
- Sets up and leads group exercise classes, adhering to YMCA health and fitness principles, including safe exercise selection, sound cueing, music speed, etc.
- Suggests modifications to accommodate various fitness levels within class.
- Directs members with special medical limitations or concerns to the Health and Wellness Director.
- Establishes a positive, upbeat attitude for class, with a clear voice and enthusiasm.
- Supervises member behavior and exhibits patience and tact while ensuring individual actions do not infringe on the rights and privileges of others.
- Maintains neat and orderly fitness class equipment, instructing members to return equipment in an orderly fashion, and operates the stereo equipment with care.
- Is always well groomed and presentable, wearing appropriate exercise attire.
- Starts and ends class on time, making efficient use of class time.
- Secures an appropriate substitute when unable to lead scheduled class and effectively communicates the request to both the substitute and Health and Wellness Director.
- Maintains an appropriate stereo volume level, (when in doubt or requested by a member, please turn the volume down).
- Visually monitors class participants for their general condition, technique, and ability to follow.
- Antsips potential safety concerns and takes appropriate action to reduce or eliminate the risk while reacting quickly and effectively to any emergency, (this may involve initiating or responding to a "Code Blue" medical emergency).
- Participates in appropriate staff meetings and training activities.
- Maintains current group exercise certifications and CPR/First Aid.
- Timely and accurately conducts employee hand scans before and after class.
- Provides high-quality customer service to all members and is able and willing to conduct YMCA tours to new or prospective members.
- Assists with the emergency evacuation of the building and other special situation tasks, as needed.
Qualifications
- Successfully completed or obtained within the first six months of teaching, Principles of YMCA Health & Fitness certification and YMCA Group Exercise Instructor certification.
- Working knowledge of the proper use of all Montclair YMCA group exercise fitness equipment and ability to lead members through a safe, sound, and fun fitness program, consistent with YMCA training principles.
- Positive, upbeat attitude, strong member service skills, with the ability to relate effectively with diverse populations.
- CPR/AED and First Aid Certification OR get certified within 90 days of employment.
