About the role

The YMCA of Greenville is seeking a Group Exercise Instructor to lead group exercise classes in a safe and effective manner. This position offers a range of benefits including free individual Y membership, discounted programs, personal training, and retirement contributions.

Responsibilities

  • Arrives at the branch YMCA in a timely manner to clock in and prepare for the class.
  • Begins and ends classes on time.
  • Prepares to teach the assigned class by establishing and announcing the class format and design.
  • All equipment and music are appropriate for the class.
  • All classes taught include a warm up, main body, and cool down (warm down for water classes) and stretch.
  • Keeps classes fresh by incorporating new music and exercises.
  • Knows YMCA emergency procedures.
  • Reports all incidents/injuries to supervisor or MOD and fills out an incident report before leaving the building.
  • Leaves the room in a clean and orderly condition, ensuring all equipment is turned off and returned to appropriate storage areas, and exercise mats and bikes are wiped down.
  • Works cooperatively with supervisor and fellow instructors, demonstrating a team spirit by substituting for other instructors when available.
  • Speaks positively about other instructors and recommends classes to members based on their abilities and/or interests.
  • Acts as an ambassador for the YMCA, connecting members by learning their names.

Requirements

  • Must hold a current certification (or willing to become certified within 90 days of employment) from a nationally recognized organization such as ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NETA for land-based classes.
  • Must hold a current certification from a nationally recognized organization such as Water Art, Water in Motion, YASA, etc. for water fitness classes.
  • Must hold a current certification in the specialty taught for specialty classes.
  • Must hold a current CPR/AED, First Aid, Child Abuse Prevention, and BBP certification.

Qualifications

  • Excellent member service skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology, and physiology.
  • Computer skills involving Microsoft Office and email.
  • Marketing and sales ability.
  • Desire for health, wellness, and fitness promotion.
  • Ability to perform under stress and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Personal passion for health and fitness.
