About the role

The Group Exercise Instructor embodies the YMCA's core values while delivering wellness services that enhance the health and well-being of members and the community. This role requires enthusiasm, a commitment to motivating others, and adherence to safety guidelines from recognized fitness governing bodies. As a Cause-Driven Leader, the instructor serves as an ambassador for YMCA culture and models service and engagement principles.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure timely arrival and proper preparation with all necessary equipment and materials.
  • Manage attendance, class schedules, and adhere to payroll and administrative procedures.
  • Create a positive, inclusive environment by greeting participants and fostering support and engagement.
  • Use clear, motivating communication and address participants by name to enhance their experience.
  • Lead warm-ups, cool-downs, and exercises that accommodate various fitness levels while following safety protocols.
  • Provide modifications to ensure a safe and effective class for all participants.
  • Connect participants to wellness resources and respond to feedback to improve the class experience.
  • Foster an engaging, enjoyable atmosphere to promote class retention and ongoing participation.
  • Demonstrate leadership by mentoring new staff and substituting for other instructors when needed.
  • Support the YMCA’s mission and foster community engagement through your role.

Qualifications

  • Must hold and maintain a nationally recognized Group Fitness Instructor certification (e.g., AFAA, NETA, ACE) or a specialized fitness certification (e.g., Zumba, Les Mills, Yoga, Barre, Pilates).
  • Must possess strong communication, program planning, team building, and leadership skills.
  • Must have a good understanding of the YMCA movement, mission, and vision.
  • Obtain Y-approved CPR/AED/First Aid certification within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or other languages.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Primarily indoors in a fitness studio or gym.
  • Involves standing, walking, and demonstrating exercises for extended periods.
  • May require lifting and setting up heavy equipment such as weights, resistance bands, or exercise mats.
  • Physically capable of demonstrating various exercises, including lifting, bending, or holding positions for prolonged periods.
  • Requires clear communication and the ability to monitor and guide participants effectively while ensuring their safety.
  • May work in varying temperature environments depending on the class location.

Pay

$31.60 - $50.60 per hour, based on salary benchmarking and grant fund requirements.
