About the role

The Parks and Recreation Department provides residents and visitors with more than 41,000 acres of desert parks and mountain preserves. The parks feature 41 trailheads and more than 200 miles of trails, and 185 city parks. Additionally, there are 32 community and recreation centers, classes, and sports programs for all ages, 29 pools, eight golf courses, and a variety of specialty and cultural venues and facilities.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Ability to communicate orally with co-workers and the public in a one-to-one setting.
  • Ability to follow directions to keep areas clean and inviting.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to learn cleaning, maintenance, and gardening methods, materials and equipment such as push and riding mowers, string trimmers, edger and hedge shears. Ability to work in different weather conditions with exposure to the elements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be willing and able to learn the functions of a Groundskeeper such as:
  • - Following verbal and written direction.
  • - Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • - Working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • - Walking for prolonged periods including walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
  • - Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
  • - Being dependable and able to actively learn and perform manual labor and physical tasks for a full shift of eight hours or more.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Groundskeeper, custodial, or landscaping experience
  • Experience doing janitorial work, including restroom cleaning.
  • Experience using and maintaining hand and power tools.
  • Trail and/or general park maintenance experience.
  • Irrigation experience.
