Groundskeeper II

About the role

The Sinclair Groundskeeper II is responsible for maintaining the campus grounds and landscaping. This position evaluates exterior conditions—including all horticultural material, streets, sidewalks, signs, irrigation, banners, pavers, general appearance, and safety conditions—and plans or redesigns elements to enhance the campus appearance. The Groundskeeper II provides general preventative and scheduled maintenance of all Grounds Department equipment, performs snow removal and deicing during inclement weather, and supervises part-time and student employees.

Responsibilities

• Provide turf care: mowing, edging, trimming, fertilizer applications, herbicide applications, and insecticide applications
• Maintain pedestrian sidewalks and concrete pavers: snow removal, deicing, sweeping, and emergency repairs
• Maintain and repair irrigation systems: diagnose, troubleshoot, and operate computerized control systems
• Operate and maintain all Grounds Department equipment: tractors, mowers, front-end loaders, backhoe, truck, sprayer, forklift, utility vehicles, and rental equipment
• Inspect campus grounds for trash: empty receptacles, pick up trash, and perform general cleanup
• Maintain shrub beds, groundcover beds, flowerbeds, and trees: fertilizing, weed control, pest control, mulching, and pruning
• Supervise student and part-time employees
• Keep accurate records of chemical applications, equipment maintenance, and supply inventories
• Perform additional duties as assigned: holiday lighting display installation/removal, wildlife control, recycling, and building trash hauling

Requirements

• Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
• 2–3 years of work experience in landscape maintenance, garden center sales, or related field
• Valid Ohio Department of Agriculture Public Operator License for pesticide application in turf and ornamentals (or ability to obtain)
• Bi-annual recertification to maintain licensure
• Proficiency in irrigation system troubleshooting and diagnostics (2–3 years of hands-on experience or completion of an Irrigation Service School program preferred)
• Strong daily communication skills to interact with employees, students, contractors, and customers
• Knowledge of plant materials, insects, and disease identification
• Valid State of Ohio driver’s license and insurability by the College’s insurance provider
