Groundskeeper

About the Role

Maintains University grounds and performs specialized grounds maintenance functions, such as heavy equipment operations, athletics field maintenance, and tool/equipment repair and rebuilding.

Responsibilities

• Maintain grounds in summer: mow and fertilize lawns, plant grass, flowers, shrubs, and trees, prune and fertilize trees and shrubs, remove weeds and brush using power equipment, etc.
• Maintain grounds in winter: remove snow and ice from parking lots and sidewalks using shovels, snow blowers, plows, salt, and sand.
• Perform other seasonal grounds work: rake leaves, sweep sand, and apply protective coverings over shrubs, etc.
• Maintain tools and equipment used in grounds work.
• Perform specialized equipment maintenance and repair tasks.
• Pick up trash around buildings and dorms and empty trash cans.
• Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes and dump trucks.
• Maintain athletic fields and plan/oversee flower bed maintenance.
• Assist with basic construction tasks: ditch digging, cement work, laying tar and asphalt, fence and sign installation.
• Complete regulatory compliance and safety training; comply with occupational safety and health standards.

Qualifications

• High school education desirable, plus two years of formal or informal grounds maintenance experience.
• Knowledge of lawn, flower, tree, and shrub care and maintenance.
• Basic trades skills and mechanical ability.
• Proficiency with hand tools and power equipment used in grounds work.
• Ability to operate heavy equipment.
• Physical ability to perform all primary job duties.
• Valid driver's license with a good driving record.

Primarily a Monday through Friday 1st shift position, with occasional evenings/weekends for winter storms and athletic events.
