Job Summary
Towson University (TU) fosters an environment that values the intellectual and personal growth of its community. Located north of Baltimore, TU is the second-largest university in the University System of Maryland, currently enrolling over 19,000 students.
Responsibilities
- Performs preventative maintenance activities such as cleaning roadside curbs, sidewalks, etc.
- Prepares areas for daily campus activities.
- Performs storm water facility maintenance assistance.
- Removes dirt, trash, and debris from assigned areas and transports same to appropriate disposal facility.
- Performs groundskeeping tasks including cultivating, planting gardens, watering, fertilizing, weeding, lawn mowing, trimming, and pruning shrubs and trees.
- Utilizes gas powered or electric equipment to clean up and transport leaves, tree limbs, etc.
- Addresses frequent service calls and emergencies such as spills, animal issues.
- Patches asphalt, paver, or concrete areas.
- Performs painting, fence, and sign maintenance.
- Operates hand and power equipment such as mowers, tillers, sweepers, snow blowers, edgers, shovels, and small vehicles.
- Performs routine assembly, cleaning, and maintenance of equipment as needed.
- Installs annuals, perennials, native plants, shrubs, and trees following detailed plans and directions.
- Transports and installs soils, mulches, compost, and other soil amendments.
- Cleans up area after completing tasks.
- Mixes and applies fertilizer and other chemicals following specific instructions under direct supervision.
- Removes snow and ice from assigned areas using hand and power snow removal equipment.
- Spreads salt, sand, and deicers to prevent slipping.
Qualifications and Skills
- Ability to read, write, and perform arithmetic calculations.
- To follow oral and written instructions.
- To operate and perform minor maintenance to assigned hand and power tools and equipment.
- To perform work in, on, around, under, and over trees, shrubs, and buildings and facilities.
- To work at heights up to 35 feet.
- To perform physical work requiring bending, stooping, reaching, carrying, and frequent heavy lifting.
- To work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
- To wear and work in personal protective equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School diploma.
- Basic gardening knowledge, plant and weed identification.
- Able to obtain within one year from the start MDE Responsible Personnel Training (formerly the Green Card).
Salary and Benefits
- $38,000 annually.
- Full University benefits including annual leave, up to 17 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and tuition remission.
- Applicants with TU or USM service may receive salary credit.
- A 2.5% increase may be added to the annual salary, pending successful completion of the initial six-month probationary period, for this position.
