About the Role
Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Athletics (SDA) programs are elite, high-profile Division I programs. The vision of SDA is to be a comprehensive perennial top-ten NCAA Division I athletics program that empowers Sun Devils to maximize human potential and make a positive impact on the university, community, and world. This position supports the maintenance of grounds and facilities for these programs.
Responsibilities
- Maintains grounds and roads, including planting, debris removal, watering, and spraying for weeds and insects.
- Plants shrubs, trees, and flowers; prunes trees and shrubs.
- Removes debris from stairs and walks, rakes leaves, and mows lawns.
- Picks up litter and empties outdoor trash/recycling cans.
- Waters trees, shrubs, and lawns; performs irrigation activities.
- Sprays for weeds and insects using unrestricted chemicals as required.
- Operates large power lawn mowers, edgers, hand tools, and large vehicles associated with ground maintenance and landscaping.
- Operates pick-up trucks, flat-rack trucks, and dump trucks for hauling and trash/debris removal.
- Performs minor maintenance and repair on equipment and tools.
- Assists in the maintenance of roads, parking lots, and other surfaces, including asphalt repairs.
- Installs and removes outdoor signs, parking and traffic control barriers, and overhead banners.
Requirements
- High School Diploma and two years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
- Knowledge of proper operation, use, and care of equipment, tools, and procedures for grounds maintenance.
- Knowledge of techniques for planting and maintaining plants, trees, and shrubs suited to desert environments.
- Knowledge of fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides used in grounds care and gardening.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and practices for landscape care, including plants, flowers, shrubs, trees, succulents, and cacti.
- Knowledge of safety precautions and procedures for chemical treatments and equipment operation.
- Knowledge of proper body mechanics and lifting procedures.
- Skill in operating grounds maintenance equipment.
- Skill in effective verbal and written communication.
- Ability to read and follow directions.
- Ability to work effectively as a team member.
Working Environment
- Activities regularly require long periods of exposure to external elements in a desert environment, including weather and potential exposure to venomous insects, insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
- Regularly operates a variety of landscaping equipment, tools, and machines, requiring extended periods of walking on uneven or rocky surfaces, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and pushing objects up to 50 pounds.
- Regular use of mowers, trimmers, edgers, shears, spreaders, hoses, hand and power tools/machines; may regularly operate a motor vehicle as assigned.
- Position receives regular review of daily work tasks to ensure adherence to established standards for quality, aesthetics, and quantity.
