About the role

The Grounds Supervisor provides direct oversight and management of the Grounds staff, ensuring they are trained, assigned, and supported in caring for the University's campus. This is an essential position requiring availability to respond to emergencies, including supervising clean-up following severe weather incidents and snow removal during winter storms, as well as supporting critical University events (e.g., Commencement, Orientation, Move-In), which often occur on weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, and assigns work schedules and duties to employees.
  • Supervises and evaluates Grounds employees' performance through regular reviews of work assignments, techniques, time, and attendance records.
  • Addresses job-related performance or conduct concerns through coaching, counseling, or other means in consultation with the Assistant Director of Facilities Operations.
  • Regularly inspects grounds for cleanliness, completed work, needed repairs, and safety compliance; ensures timely reporting of defects or deterioration via the work order system.
  • Actively encourages a safe work environment by enforcing safety rules and reporting concerns.
  • Ensures work orders are properly completed and updated; prepares reports of work activities, inspection logs, and personnel records as requested.
  • Maintains accurate inventory of equipment through regular inspections, storage, cataloging, and sign-in/out logs.
  • Tracks use and availability of supplies, including fuel storage, and requests materials as necessary.
  • Conducts onboarding and ongoing training for staff on safe, proper, and standardized use of equipment, supplies, and techniques.
  • Communicates daily with key personnel regarding special events requiring special arrangements.
  • Maintains a flexible schedule to observe work completed during routine shifts, overtime, or shift adjustments.
  • Supervises cleanup during and after severe weather incidents, including snow removal.
  • Supports essential University events, such as Commencement, Orientation, Move-In, Open Houses, and others, often scheduled on weekends.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Three (3) consecutive years of supervisory experience (required). An equivalent combination of supervisory experience and education may be considered (e.g., 30 credit hours = one year of college).
  • Commitment to customer service when working with students, parents, faculty, staff, and guests.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct all aspects of Grounds responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks in a self-directed environment while maintaining high productivity.
  • Accessibility and availability during emergencies, weather events, or as needed to support University missions.
  • Ability to work within Facilities Operations and collaborate with skilled and unskilled personnel.
  • Ability to develop efficient work schedules and make optimal use of personnel and equipment.
  • Experience training and supervising a large group of employees.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to follow and provide instructions effectively.
  • Ability to present information confidently and competently to groups of employees.
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and willingness to learn work order management systems, internet navigation, and email.
  • Ability to walk assigned areas and other parts of campus for extended periods.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and make sound decisions under stress.

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. Additional hours as required, including weekends for emergencies or University events.

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt
Full-Time/Annual Schedule: 12 months
