About the role
The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Grounds Maintenance Worker. This position is non-exempt and falls under the FLSA status.
Responsibilities
- Performs semi-skilled landscaping, grounds maintenance, and roads maintenance tasks in a multi-building University complex.
- Operates vehicles, tractors, machinery, and hand tools to do seeding, sodding, aerating, weeding, fertilizing, mowing, and trimming turfed and planted areas.
- Aids a certified grounds maintenance worker in applying chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides to trees, shrubs, and turf.
- Maintains outdoor facilities such as playing fields, shelter houses, fences, picnic areas, campgrounds, recreation facilities, fishing areas, nature trails, and fences.
- Plants and prunes trees and shrubs.
- Cleans and maintains vehicles and equipment.
- Maintains roads, walkways, parking lots, and loading docks to include minor paving, patching, grading, ditching, and snow removal.
- Collects and removes trash and debris.
- Makes outdoor set-ups for special events.
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED.
- Valid driver’s license.
- One year of experience in grounds keeping including methods used in planting, cultivation, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs, flowers, and turf.
- Operation of ground maintenance equipment including motorized equipment and hand tools and knowledge of routine equipment and methods.
- Agricultural background and high mechanical aptitude.
- Experience with tractors and trucks.
- Knowledge of microcomputers, word processing, spreadsheet, and electronic mail software.
Qualifications
- Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 6:00 am to 2:00 pm.
- Occasional irregular or prolonged hours may be necessary to complete assigned responsibilities.
- This position is considered essential. Extended hours at any time of the day or night when necessary to complete the responsibilities to remove snow and ice or to perform clean-up work after severe weather or other emergencies.
- Travel within University and occasional travel to offsite University locations using a University vehicle is required.
