About the role

Under the direction of the Director of Maintenance, assess site needs of head custodians and grounds personnel and provide collaborative grounds maintenance training. Maintain a sprinkler repair stock for the district; oversee landscape and sprinkler contracts during installation; perform grounds maintenance and gardening work.

This position requires a high degree of skill in sprinkler system design, installation, and repair; knowledge of landscape design; handling chemicals; gardening equipment repair; tree pruning; and all other areas in horticulture. Due to seasonal and weather factors, other duties in maintenance and operations may be assigned temporarily.

Responsibilities include all duties of a Grounds person, as well as administering specified grounds training programs to head custodians and grounds personnel, and supplementing training provided by site-level managers.

  • Perform grounds maintenance and gardening work
  • Design, install, and repair sprinkler systems
  • Apply knowledge of landscape design and horticulture
  • Handle chemicals and repair gardening equipment
  • Prune trees and perform related horticultural tasks
  • Temporarily assume other maintenance and operations duties as needed due to seasonal or weather factors

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of experience in gardening, grounds maintenance, or related work
  • Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license
  • Valid State of California Qualified Applicators License from the Department of Pesticide Regulations (preferred)

Physical Requirements

  • Vision to read printed material and a computer screen
  • Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio
  • Finger dexterity to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator, and to operate tools and equipment
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites
  • Frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards
  • Mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and around machines, and to climb and descend ladders
  • Operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment
  • Demonstrate sufficient strength, mobility, and range of motion to arm lift 60 pounds and floor lift 60 pounds in an employee entrance evaluation

Post-Offer Requirements

  • DOJ and FBI Criminal Background Check
  • TB Test within the last 60 days (Education Code 49406, Assembly Bill 1667)
  • Complete district-mandated training (e.g., Mandated Reporter, Sexual Harassment)
  • Pre-Employment Physical Evaluation conducted through the District (minimum 50-pound lifting requirement)

Pay

$30.17 to $36.69/hour

Schedule

8 hours per day, 5 days a week, 12 months per year
