About the Role

Under general supervision, this position performs skilled mowing and landscape work related to the care and upkeep of school district property. Employees in this classification lead work crews and exercise considerable latitude in methods and priority of tasks. Work objectives include maintaining cleanliness, order, and environmentally safe conditions of school district property.

Responsibilities

• Respond to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner, representing OCPS positively.
• Lead work crews engaged in landscape projects and tasks on school district property.
• Perform grounds maintenance activities, including cutting, mowing, weed-eating, edging, blowing, planting foliage, and mulching.
• Perform shrubbery and tree maintenance activities, such as pruning limbs, shaping hedges, and cutting branches.
• Maintain records of materials and supplies usage for district inventory and property accounting.
• Operate OCPS Grounds’ vehicles with a trailer and various tools and equipment (e.g., saws, sprayers, air compressors, mowers, blowers, weed-eaters, hedge trimmers).
• Assist with facilities and trades maintenance and repair tasks within scope of abilities.
• Ensure cleanliness, order, and environmentally safe conditions of district property; address safety concerns promptly and report maintenance or repair needs.
• Clean and maintain equipment, tools, and materials, ensuring safe use and operation.
• Perform clean-up and work site restoration, including disposing of waste and debris.
• Respond to emergencies or critical incidents to resolve, confine, or prevent hazardous conditions.
• Stay updated on current technology relevant to the role and attend training as required.
• Maintain timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Three years of progressively skilled experience in landscaping work, demonstrating leadership qualities and the ability to fulfill physical and dexterity requirements.
• Valid Florida Driver’s license and compliance with the District’s Safe Driving Plan.
• Successful completion of the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS) for new hires (effective August 24, 2009).

• Mathematical Aptitude: Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
• Functional Reasoning: Ability to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagrammatic form, involving semi-routine standardized work with latitude for independent judgment.
• Situational Reasoning: Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Physical Ability: Tasks involve moderate physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing 5–40 pounds (occasionally up to 50 pounds).
• Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require depth perception; most tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
• Environmental Factors: Regular exposure to adverse conditions, such as hot/cold temperatures, rain, dust, noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, strong odors, and toxic/poisonous agents.
