Grounds Crew Leader

About the role

Perform grounds maintenance, conservation, and improvement duties as part of a grounds crew. Support and assist grounds crew in maintaining, conserving, and improving grounds districtwide. Maintain and care for the appearance of grounds, trees, and shrubs. Manage a program of vegetation, pest control, and training in grounds keepers. Adhere to federal and state laws, as well as district policies, procedures, and regulations.

Essential Functions

• Supervise and assist in the evaluation of assigned grounds keepers.
• Oversee the maintenance, appearance and health of plants, grass, shrubs and flowers.
• Provide training to grounds keepers on the safe use of various equipment, tools and chemicals as needed.
• Maintain the district vehicle, vehicle inventory, materials, tools, and record keeping necessary to satisfactorily complete assigned tasks.
• Determine when trees and shrubs need pruning and trimming and provide assistance as needed.
• Perform various manual tasks involved in landscaping and site improvement, preventive and emergency work that relates to ground maintenance.
• Assist with the care of athletic fields and perform routine grounds keeper duties.
• Assist Equipment Operations and Sprinkler Specialist when necessary.
• Apply herbicides and pesticides in compliance with state regulations.
• Inspect and service grounds equipment as necessary to maintain proper operating and safety requirements.
• Be responsible for district vehicle and vehicle inventory, if assigned, and for materials, tools, and equipment, including making adjustments and using safe operating procedures; request scheduling of required maintenance and expectations and keep vehicle, tools, equipment and work areas clean and orderly.
• Cooperate with fellow co-workers and routinely report necessary information to the immediate supervisor.
• Attendance at the work site is required to meet essential functions of the job.

• Participate in professional development activities as required by the district.
• Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties; support district/department goals.
• Maintain a professional code of ethics and perform other duties as assigned.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
• Must possess a TDA non-commercial pesticide applicator license, category 3A or must obtain within 90 days of employment.
• Three (3) years' experience in grounds maintenance.
• Valid Texas/New Mexico Driver's License; must be insurable by the district's auto liability insurance carrier.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
• Subject to the district drug and alcohol testing policy and regulation.

• Maintain emotional control under stress.
• Frequent districtwide travel.
• Must be able to lift, carry, push and/or pull up to fifty (50) pounds frequently.
• Work under all weather conditions, around/on moving objects or vehicles, and under noisy conditions.
• Be adaptable to work a shift schedule and/or hours other than regularly assigned.
• Extended periods of walking, standing, bending, reaching, kneeling, reaching, stooping, heavy lifting and carrying.
• Subject to district drug and alcohol testing policy.
• Be exposed to insects; ability to work with pesticides and herbicides or other potentially hazardous materials in a safe manner.
