GROUNDS KEEPER II

About the Role

This position is manual labor performing maintenance of grounds in assigned areas on campus. The employee safely operates various types of equipment associated with grounds maintenance and will likely operate more difficult machinery including riding mowers, tractor loaders, leaf trucks, and dump trucks. This employee assists and directs the crew in work completion, as well as assists in the training of proper maintenance techniques and methods. The role involves following and monitoring safety protocols, overseeing the crew’s equipment, and assisting in other aspects of grounds maintenance such as weed control and irrigation. The employee will respond to campus emergencies during work hours, including inclement weather events.

Responsibilities

• Maintain grounds turf and landscaping by operating major equipment such as riding lawn mowers, backpack blowers, weed trimmers and edgers, dump trucks, leaf trucks, tractors, aerators, and tractor loaders.
• Keep assigned grounds area professionally maintained.
• Assist in planning and organization of daily work.
• Help and direct the crew to stay on task to meet established timelines.
• Monitor assigned grounds area for maintenance and safety issues. (60% of time)
• Maintain and follow all safety guidelines, including wearing and using PPE safety gear; assist with monitoring crew for adherence to safety guidelines.
• Assist in training employees in proper maintenance techniques and methods.
• Monitor all equipment in crew’s use for servicing, repairs, maintenance, safety, and proper operating condition.
• Responsible for crew’s equipment inventory. (20% of time)
• Assist in other aspects of grounds maintenance including:
  • Mulching
  • Insecticide, fungicide, and herbicide applications in the assigned grounds area
  • Irrigation (operating properly, setting water times and locations, and reporting malfunctions to the Irrigation Crew)
  • Weed control
  • Trash patrol
• (15% of time)
• Respond to campus emergencies during work hours, including inclement weather events. (5% of time)

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 2 years of related experience.

Skills

• Ability to operate all types of grounds maintenance equipment, including mowers, tractors, trimmers, edgers, and backpack blowers.
• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to work under adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, etc.).
• Knowledge of pesticides and weed control.

Physical Demands

• Constant physical labor 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
• Extensive/constant stooping, bending, squatting, and working with hands above head.
• Lift up to 75 lbs consistently throughout the workday.
• Driving as needed to perform job-related tasks.

Pay

Advertised salary: $38,000.

Schedule

Full-time, Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM.
