Grocery Manager

About the role

At Sprouts Farmers Market, the Grocery Manager is responsible for the sales and operation of multiple departments including Grocery, Dairy, Frozen Food, and Beer/Wine. The role involves ensuring products are handled properly, rotated for freshness, and date controls are performed, while controlling costs through monitoring and improving operations to increase profitability—including managing labor costs and reducing loss due to shrink, damage, and pilferage.

Responsibilities

• Assist in preparation for physical inventory counts
• Oversee or assist with unloading trucks from distribution centers, verify deliveries against invoices, note shortages and overages, and report to suppliers
• Manage ordering, compliance, sanitation, back-room inventory, and department safety
• Engage and evaluate team members through coaching, feedback, and one-on-one development discussions; make recommendations on merit increases via bi-annual performance reviews
• Participate in in-store meetings and lead a team to deliver high-quality products, service, and customer experience
• Recruit, hire, and make promotion/transfer decisions in collaboration with the Store Manager
• Exercise independent judgment to address team member concerns and take corrective actions when needed, including progressive discipline and termination when necessary
• Ensure productivity and efficiency by creating and adjusting schedules and staffing levels
• Communicate standards, expectations, policy changes, and product knowledge to team members
• Serve as a Key Carrier and/or act as Manager on Duty (MOD) as needed

Qualifications

• At least 18 years of age
• One year of managerial or supervisory experience, including responsibility for managing a department/team within a multi-department operation in retail, hospitality, or service industry
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to take and give direction in a team environment
• Outgoing, friendly behavior with a positive attitude; ability to interact effectively with customers
• Proven leadership ability to build, motivate, and maintain staff; working knowledge of personnel reports, margin reports, weekly sales numbers, and financial goals
• Strong focus on detail, analytical and problem-solving skills
• Food Safety certification and ability to ensure compliance with federal, state, and company regulations for product freshness, food safety, weights and measures, store safety, employee safety, refrigeration, and sanitation
• Strong organization and planning skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks
• Physical requirements include:
  • Vertically transferring milk trays weighing up to 60 lbs. from 9” to 62” for up to 25 hours
  • Vertically/horizontally transferring boxes weighing up to 50 lbs. from 5” to 34” for a distance up to 5 feet for up to 25 hours without mechanical assistance
  • Repetitive squatting, kneeling, or bending to access a point 5 inches from the floor for up to 30 hours
• Ability to work a flexible schedule that changes with business needs, including nights, weekends, and holidays
