Grocery Manager

About the role

The Grocery Manager oversees the sales and operations of multiple departments—Grocery, Dairy, Frozen Food, and Beer/Wine—ensuring product freshness, cost control, and profitability. You’ll manage labor costs, reduce shrink, and maintain compliance with sanitation, safety, and inventory standards. This role also involves unloading trucks, verifying deliveries, and preparing for physical inventory counts.

Responsibilities

• Ensure products are handled properly, rotated for freshness, and date controls are performed.
• Control costs by monitoring and improving operations to increase profitability, including managing labor and reducing shrink.
• Assist in preparing the store for physical inventory counts.
• Oversee or assist with unloading trucks, verifying deliveries against invoices, and reporting shortages/overages.
• Manage ordering, compliance, sanitation, back-room inventory, and department safety.
• Engage and evaluate team members through coaching, feedback, and one-on-one development discussions.
• Complete bi-annual performance reviews and make recommendations for merit increases.
• Recruit, hire, and make promotion/transfer decisions in collaboration with the Store Manager.
• Address team member concerns with independent judgment and document corrective actions, including collaboration with HR for performance management.
• Create and adjust schedules to maximize productivity and efficiency.
• Communicate standards, expectations, policy changes, and product knowledge to team members.
• Lead a team to deliver high-quality products, exceptional service, and a great customer experience.
• Serve as a Key Carrier and/or Manager on Duty (MOD) as needed.

Requirements

• At least 18 years of age with 1 year of managerial or supervisory experience in a multi-department retail, hospitality, or service industry.
• Strong communication skills (written and verbal) and ability to work in a team environment.
• Outgoing, friendly demeanor with a positive attitude and ability to interact with customers.
• Proven leadership ability to build, motivate, and maintain staff.
• Working knowledge of personnel reports, margin reports, weekly sales numbers, and financial goals.
• Strong focus on detail, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Food Safety certification and adherence to all federal, state, and company regulations for product freshness, food safety, weights and measures, store safety, employee safety, refrigeration, and sanitation.
• Strong organization and planning skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.

Physical Demands

• Vertically transfer milk trays weighing up to 60 lbs. from 9” to 62” for up to 25 hours.
• Vertically/horizontally transfer boxes weighing up to 50 lbs. from 5” to 34” for a distance up to 5 feet for up to 25 hours without mechanical assistance.
• Repetitive squatting, kneeling, or bending to access points 5 inches from the floor for up to 30 hours.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
