About the role
This employee will operate a grinder in order to meet customer specifications on the product. This is a union, hourly position located in Torrington, Connecticut, USA.
Responsibilities
- Operate grinding machine (30” wheel). Select grinding wheels (30” dia.) according to knowledge of metal properties and abrasives.
- Grind roll up to 2,000mm diameter, 14,000mm length.
- Organize, plan, and prioritize work.
- Read work order and production schedules to determine specifications.
- Perform wheel changes and mount wheels to hub.
- Make roll measurements and roll track measurements, maintaining close tolerance (microns).
- Use and maintain a variety of precision measuring and inspection equipment.
- Check roll diameters, hardness, and smoothness.
- Remove dummy heads and select drivers and shoes for job.
- Perform daily machine and equipment maintenance, including routine oil and filter changes, greasing machine, and maintain equipment service records.
- Attention to detail and good work ethic.
- Complete daily paperwork.
- Follow good housekeeping practices; keep area clean and organized.
Requirements
- At least 3–5 years of manual machining experience as a grinder.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to read and use tape measures, calipers, and micrometers, including metric measurements.
- Familiarity with run out, taper, surface finish, tolerance, and blueprint reading.
- Computer skills required for communication and work creation purposes.
- Good mechanical aptitude and experience with powered hand tools.
- Some knowledge of hydraulics helpful.
- Experience using lift trucks and overhead cranes desired.
- Must be able to lift 50–60 lbs. and work up to a 12-hour shift on a concrete floor.
- Ability to train for operation of all machines.
