About the Role

A classroom teacher fosters and enhances an effective learning environment, facilitates curriculum development or revision, establishes learning objectives based on District guidelines, provides instruction, and evaluates student performance and progress.

Responsibilities

• Fosters an educational environment conducive to student learning and maturation; plans and implements an instructional program tailored to individual and group needs, including at-risk or special needs youth; prepares lesson plans.
• Uses appropriate instructional methods and materials suited to student well-being and curriculum objectives; attends in-service training and pursues professional growth to remain current in teaching methods and techniques.
• Establishes and implements classroom policies and procedures for student behavior and conduct; provides guidance, counseling, and discipline to support student achievement; makes referrals for additional assistance as needed.
• Confers with students, parents or guardians, and staff to provide guidance, evaluation, and encouragement for student success.
• Sets classroom goals and objectives aligned with State and District guidelines; evaluates and records student progress; prepares reports for parents or guardians.
• Collects, interprets, and provides data and reports for administrative purposes.
• Directs the activities of assigned non-certificated personnel.
• Attends required staff meetings and participates in activities deemed necessary by the District or building principal.
• Serves on staff committees and participates in activities to enhance personal and professional skills.
• Performs related tasks consistent with the scope and responsibility of the position.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree; academic preparation or experience in teaching a culturally, racially, and economically diverse student population in an urban school system.
• Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate; some positions may require first aid, CPR certification, or a valid Washington State driver’s license.
• Criminal justice fingerprint and background check clearance.

Working Conditions

• Deals with a wide range of student achievement and behavior; remains flexible to meet students' immediate needs.
• Handles multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritizes effectively; may experience frequent interruptions.
• May occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students.
• Potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students.
• Some positions may require specific physical movements, stamina, or exertion to demonstrate techniques safely or conduct/direct students.
• May need to take precautions to prevent or lessen exposure to materials, fumes, equipment, cutting edges, or hot surfaces.
• May teach in a classroom without telephone communication.

Benefits

Eligibility for benefits is determined by the number of hours worked during the school year (September 1 through August 31). Employees scheduled to work 630 hours or more in a year are eligible for benefits administered by the Washington State Healthcare Authority (HCA) under the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB).
