About the role

The Graphic Designer I position at University Marketing & Communications at California Lutheran University is responsible for designing and producing a wide variety of marketing materials targeting internal and external audiences. This includes creating visual communications through graphics, typography, photography, and adhering to the university's brand standards and style guide.

Responsibilities

  • Project Management/Coordination - Reviews all submitted print and signage work orders and confirms readiness for production. Meets with Associate Creative Director to discuss submitted projects, contacts clients for project information and assets, schedules intake and review meetings, takes meeting notes, creates project schedules, assigns projects to designers, manages projects as a project lead, initiates RFQs with vendors, tasks out projects on Teamwork, sends design drafts for review/approval, sends client edits/feedback, and documents project updates.

  • Photography Support - Assists with priority University Marketing & Communications photography needs, prepares shot lists, photo sample sheets, wardrobe instructions, reviews and categorizes delivered photos, advises on photography needs, coordinates EG/banner installations, schedules installation schedules, generates location plans/installation maps, notifies partners of installation information, attends installations, and ensures safety and completion.

  • Brand Management - Reviews submitted brand proofs, ensures they meet brand guidelines, provides feedback, discusses brand-related topics, updates or refreshes existing materials, and supports design student production/projects as Design Lead.

  • Design Production - Conceptualizes, designs, produces printed materials, creates visual assets, designs environmental graphics, organizes presentation materials, creates promotional apparel and merchandise, coordinates printing production, generates and edits draft and final files, maintains electronic archives, and performs miscellaneous other job-related duties.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop; Microsoft Word.

  • Principles, practice, and techniques of graphic design, including typography and color theory.

  • Generating digital ads, such as animated GIFs and HTML5 ads.

  • Printing processes and requirements.

  • Photo enhancement and manipulation techniques.

Skills

  • Create and produce graphic materials using a range of media, methods, techniques, and equipment.

  • Organize and produce presentation materials.

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Analyze graphic and technical information and create interpretive illustrations.

  • Analyze and interpret user graphic requirements.

  • Develop print and/or reproduction specifications.

  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with accuracy and consistency.

  • Understand the overall strategic objective, as well as the fine details, to accomplish the goal of the project.

  • Work effectively as a member of a team.

  • Organize work and manage time effectively.

  • Demonstrate creativity and originality in graphic design while keeping in line with university brand standards.

  • Remain current with the latest design trends and technology by attending workshops, conferences, reviewing professional publications, and conducting online research.

  • Successfully produce and complete projects on time, within budget, and to the agreed design expectations.

  • Grow and thrive with an in-house design team within an academic environment with high standards.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related field with three to five years of professional design and production experience.

  • Experience in higher education marketing design preferred.
