Responsibilities

  • Aid in the creation and coordination of complex funder-compliant programmatic budgets.
  • Lead the creation of less complex budgets in collaboration with program and accounting staff.
  • Create compelling, persuasive grant narratives through effective storytelling, relevant data, and superior prose.
  • Develop, write, and submit major, complex grant proposals.
  • Maintain and contribute to data organization systems, including departmental databases.
  • Contribute to shared team resources.
  • Undertake internal and external research to identify funding sources and gather data.
  • Facilitate discussions with the program and grant writing team to determine appropriate data.
  • Assist program staff in designing programmatic and/or research activities to align with funder interests.
  • Identify and develop strategic relationships for grant partnerships.
  • Participate in collaborative efforts with universities, agencies, projects, and entities.
  • Provide thoughtful and consistent peer review of grant proposals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of proven success as a professional grant writer, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with governmental grant submissions, especially HRSA, SAMHSA, NIH, and the County of San Diego.
  • Experience with proposal development in a FQHC or other non-profit health context preferred.
  • Exceptional project management, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, comprehend, digest, explain, and create compelling funding arguments using and analyzing technical scientific, social-science, clinical, and medical data.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel to calculate budgets up to $1,000,000, including mid-cycle budget/salary increases, modified indirect cost calculations, and subcontract budgets.
  • Experience with AI tools to assess grant drafts against funder criteria and support basic grant preparation and management tasks.
  • Occasional travel between sites and other locations.
