Responsibilities

  • Analyze monthly grant reconciliations to ensure compliance with funder and agency guidelines.
  • Process payroll expense reclassifications as needed.
  • Ensure accuracy of budget information on the general ledger.
  • Verify collections of funds with Accounts Receivable and maintain accuracy of receivable balances in the ledger for assigned contracts.
  • Collaborate with program staff to develop budgets and budget modifications.
  • Engage in a forecasting process to review significant changes from budget.
  • Affirm accuracy of budget information in the general ledger.
  • Prepare cash flow projections during budget and budget modification processes.
  • Communicate budget submission deadlines to program staff.
  • Train program staff on reading the budget and understanding financial variance reports.
  • Review financial status with program staff and ensure budgets are up-to-date and accurate.
  • Investigate budget to actual variances and communicate findings to programs.
  • Supervise outsourcing billing team.
  • Maintain complete and accurate grant files.
  • Assist with funder and financial statement audits.
  • Train program staff on proper coding of expenditures.
  • Work with the Operational Accounting unit to open and close cost centers as necessary.
  • Proactively support program staff in managing their programs.
  • Attend professional trainings, including funder trainings, to stay informed about funder requirements.
  • Submit 65a related documents for approval.
  • Undertake special projects as assigned.

Budgeting/Forecasting

  • Work with program staff to develop budgets and budget modifications.
  • Provide assumptions and actual data for budget development.
  • Engage in a forecasting process with programs to review significant changes from budget.

  • Train program staff as needed on how to read the budget to actual financial variance reports.
  • Meet with program staff to review financial status and ensure budgets are up-to-date and accurate.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree – at least 2 years related experience in nonprofit accounting.
  • Bachelor’s degree – at least 3 years related experience in nonprofit accounting.
  • Non-degree – at least 7 years related experience in nonprofit accounting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial planning and analysis.
  • Strong oral and written communication, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work within time constraints, manage multiple tasks at the same time, and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and other standard business technology.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of Accounting Software Intacct/Nexonia is a plus.

Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent communication, writing, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to climb five flights of stairs, if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork.
  • Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents.
  • Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation.
