Graduate Teaching Assistant - MCIS, Mathematics (Fall 2026 - Spring 2027)

Assists faculty by teaching lower-level courses or labs, developing teaching materials, and preparing and grading examinations, papers, or other student work. The GTA must be assigned to and responsible for teaching a credit-bearing course under the supervision of a faculty member experienced in the teaching field. Work with students will be closely supervised to provide opportunities to gain teaching skills and a better grasp of the academic discipline.

Responsibilities

• Performs a combination of duties under the supervision of faculty and lab supervisors.
• Assists mathematics faculty and lab supervisors in preparation and clean-up.
• Serves as instructor/lab assistant.
• Assists in logging and processing course materials, assignments, papers, and internship materials.
• Assists in research-related tasks including use of the library and internet to find and/or update sources.
• Tutors math students.
• Performs clerical and other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Must be classified as a degree-seeking graduate student at JSU.
• Must be actively enrolled in a graduate degree program at JSU during the assistantship semester.
• If a new student, must be admitted to a degree program.
• Must be actively enrolled in required coursework towards the degree. The assistantship will not pay for courses not in the degree program plan of study/checklist.
• If required to take undergraduate courses for the graduate degree (foundation courses, undergraduate deficiency courses, etc.), the assistantship will only pay for these if documented as required via memo from the student’s advisor to the Director of Graduate Studies.
• Must hold the minimum required GPA for the enrolled degree program.
• During the assistantship semester, must be enrolled in six to nine (6-9) graduate semester hours in a fall or spring semester or six to nine (6-9) graduate semester hours in a full summer term (May, June, and July). Exceptions may be made by the Director of Graduate Studies under specific circumstances.
• Must not be holding another campus job.
• A graduate assistant is prohibited from accepting other forms of tuition scholarships or waivers from the University, except for outside scholarships and JSU employee tuition assistance.
• If previously held a Graduate Assistantship at JSU, must have fulfilled all duties and complied with all policies.
• Preferred that a GTA not teach and take a class during the same summer term; permission must be granted by the advisor and Director of Graduate Studies.
• Must complete FERPA training, Sexual Harassment training, and other required training through JSU.
• International students must be certified by the Director of the International House and Programs, be in valid immigration status, and meet additional requirements (e.g., F-1 or J-1 visa, official photo ID, Social Security Card).

Pay

Graduate Teaching Assistants receive a $4,000 stipend each semester, disbursed in four equal monthly payments. In addition, assistantships include a scholarship of up to $4,386.00 per semester.

Schedule

Graduate Teaching Assistants are expected to work 20 hours per week during a fall or spring semester.
