About the Role

A Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) under the supervision of faculty and/or staff assists with lab-related tasks, classroom instruction, academic support duties, and departmental operational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as lab instructor.
  • Assists in logging and processing course materials, assignments, papers, and internship materials.
  • Assists in research-related tasks including use of the library and internet to find and/or update sources.
  • Assists faculty and lab supervisor in lab preparation and clean-up.
  • Performs a combination of duties under the supervision of faculty and lab supervisor.
  • Performs clerical and other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be classified as a degree-seeking graduate student at Jax State.
  • Must be actively enrolled in a graduate degree program at Jax State during the assistantship semester.
  • If a new student, must be admitted to a degree program.
  • Must be actively enrolled in required coursework towards the degree.
  • Must hold the minimum required GPA for the enrolled degree program and a minimum GPA of 3.00 in Biology coursework.
  • Must be enrolled in six to nine (6-9) graduate semester hours in a fall or spring semester, or six to nine (6-9) graduate semester hours in a full summer term (May, June, and July). Exceptions may be made by the Director of Graduate Studies under specific circumstances.
  • Must not be holding another campus job.
  • If previously held a Graduate Assistantship at Jax State, must have fulfilled all duties and complied with all policies.
  • Must complete FERPA training, Sexual Harassment training, and other required training through JSU.
  • Students whose native language is not English must submit official TOEFL scores (minimum: 560 PBT, 220 CBT, or 83 iBT).
  • International students must meet additional requirements, including valid immigration status and full-time enrollment.

Pay

Graduate Teaching Assistants receive a $4,000 stipend each semester, disbursed in four equal monthly payments. Assistantships also include a scholarship up to $4,386.00 per semester.

Schedule

Graduate Teaching Assistants are expected to work 20 hours per week during a fall or spring semester. Teaching schedules vary based on lab prep, in-class lab time, and post-lab work.
