About the role

The Division of Pediatric Neurology in the Department of Pediatrics has an immediate opening for an Hourly Graduate Student. Under the supervision of a licensed clinical psychologist, the Graduate Student will administer and score standardized psychological test batteries evaluating the cognitive, neuropsychological, behavioral, and emotional status of pediatric and adult research participants diagnosed with neuromuscular, neurological, and neurogenetic disorders. The Graduate Student will provide technical support to psychologists and neurologists on multidisciplinary teams with clinical research studies, work closely with research teams to ensure the successful implementation of research protocols, maintain data integrity, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Assessment and Data Collection
    • Administer and score standardized neuropsychological and psychological assessments to research participants, ensuring adherence to research protocols.
    • Score tests administered, including objective tests administered by psychologist, and report findings to psychologist for interpretation.
    • Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of assessment results, observations, and participant demographics.
    • Monitor and document participant compliance and engagement during research assessments.
  • Research Coordination
    • Collaborate with principal investigators, clinicians, and research team to develop and refine research protocols.
    • Assist in participant recruitment and scheduling, ensuring that all participants meet inclusion/exclusion criteria.
    • Coordinate the logistics of data collection sessions, including the preparation of assessment materials and equipment.
    • Ensure that research participants scheduled for testing are seen in a timely manner.
    • Keep psychologist and study team informed of participant testing status.
  • Participant Interaction
    • Build rapport and establish a comfortable and trusting environment for research participants.
    • Explain research procedures clearly, addressing any particular questions or concerns.
    • Ensure informed consent processes are followed, and maintain participant confidentiality.
  • Data Management
    • Organize and manage research data, including data entry, quality control, and secure storage.
    • Collaborate with data analysts to ensure accurate data coding and analysis.
    • Order, maintain security of, and transmit test materials.
  • Research Ethics and Compliance
    • Adhere to ethical guidelines and research regulations, including Institutional Review Board (IRB) and HIPAA requirements.
    • Review and ensure timeliness, accuracy, availability, and security of information related to participant assessments, data handling, and research records.
    • Understand, adhere to, and model core organizational standards as defined by the University of Utah and specifically within the Department of Pediatrics.
    • Report any concerns or issues related to research ethics and compliance.
  • Reporting and Documentation
    • Assist in the preparation of research reports, presentations, and publications.
    • Contribute to the interpretation of research findings and the development of research manuscripts.
  • Training and Development
    • Stay informed about the latest research methods, assessment tools, and advancements in the field.
    • Attend training conferences offered by the department as well as by outside organizations, including research sponsors.
    • May provide training and supervision to research assistants or interns as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

  • Typically required nearly continuously: Office environment, hospital or clinical research settings.
  • Interaction with diverse research participants of varying ages and abilities.
  • Physical requirements:
    • Nearly continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking.
    • Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), writing, using computers/tablets, walking.
    • Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communications skills; and a commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Current Graduate Student in Educational Psychology or Psychology.
  • This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements, including immunization according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.
  • Ability to commute/relocate to Salt Lake City, Utah area: reliable commute or planning to relocate before starting work (required).

Preferences

  • Experience in administration of psychological and neuropsychological assessments to adults and children.
  • Background experience that includes micro-computers.
  • Previous experience as a psychometrist.
  • Strong organizational and data management skills.
  • Willingness to learn test administration protocols.
  • Knowledge of research ethics and regulations.
  • The ideal candidate has the ability to operate independently and in teams, thrives in learning and clinical environments, is passionate about providing the highest quality research outcomes, and building positive relationships with research team and participants.

Pay

Pay rate range: $17.00 to $21.63 per hour.

Schedule

  • 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • If supported by operational needs, a reduced schedule of no less than 20 hours per week may be considered.
  • May require flexible hours to accommodate research schedule: 4 – 8 hour shifts, weekdays, no nights or weekends.
  • The position is required to work onsite.
